Cotton is everywhere: in your sheets, towels, shirts, and probably a sizeable section of your underwear drawer. Durable, breathable and comfortable, cotton is a fabric made for all occasions. So many times, in fact, that knowing how to properly wash cotton (and deal with strange stains) is practically essential. So, what are the care of cotton?

How to wash cotton clothes: the basics

The brilliant thing about cotton is that it is generally machine washable. If you're worried about shrinking, keep the heat relatively low (30 degrees or so) and use a quality liquid soap that will remove stains effectively even at low temperatures, such as Ala Matic Liquid . Air dry or tumble dry on low!

You can wash 100% cotton garments by hand if you're really worried about shrinking, but it shouldn't be necessary. Cotton is quite durable, and if you keep it at a moderate temperature, it shouldn't shrink or become damaged.

Cotton sheets and towels can also be washed at 30 to 40 degrees, but it's a good idea to wash them at 60 to help kill germs and bacteria, especially if someone at home has been sick.

How to remove grease stains from cotton

  • Washing . Use the highest temperature recommended on the garment care label. The stain should come off easily, but if there is still a mark, repeat the process.
