RACK UNIT EQUIPMENT MOUNTING TIPS AND TRICKS
How to choose racks and rack cabinets
If you're on tour, rack cabinets are the most professional solution for protecting your precious and expensive mic preamps, mixers, processors, wireless gear and other audio equipment. However, not all racks and cabinets are created equal. This Alhva rack guide includes relevant information such as tips and tricks that will help you install equipment in your rack, make your life easier when transporting your equipment from one show to another, and ensure you get the most out of your rack. As there is a lot to consider when purchasing racks and cases for your specific combination of equipment, please feel free to contact us for more information.
The right rack depth
The space behind the mounting gear reserves space for all cables / connectors that need to remain connected when the rack is closed. Alhva exoracks have a rack depth of 19.5" (50 cm ), a compact enough size to accommodate most interfaces on the market. If you think you have a very deep interface and are not sure how much space you will need in your rack, contact us and tell us what equipment you need to rack and we will help you find the best option.
Balance the Rack
Mount the heaviest gear at the bottom of the rack and the lighter items at the top. This will help keep the rack balanced, prevent it from tipping over when moved, and make it easier to transport and lift.
Allow airflow
Electronic equipment, especially amplifiers, can generate a lot of heat. Heat buildup threatens the life of your equipment. If equipment such as an amplifier gets really hot, leave at least an empty space between the equipment in the rack to allow for airflow. By having channels along its entire length and not pre-set holes, Alhva exoracks allow you to determine by slip, the distance and position of equipment in the frame with complete freedom. Heat builds up, so try to organize things on your rack so that the biggest heat producers are unaffected. In some cases, you might need a rack-mount fan to keep things cool.
Convenient Power and Lighting Solutions
Rack-mountable power conditioners can provide eight or more outlets in a single rack space. Using one of these straps allows you to keep power cords organized and means you only need to find one outlet to connect your equipment rack. Because working on a rack in a dark club or studio can be challenging, many rack-mountable power conditioners include retractable lights that can illuminate the rack's equipment.
What is ATA?
ATA is the abbreviation for Air Transport Association. It sets the standards for cargo transport on aircraft. Among these are the requirements for approved equipment boxes. The ATA designation means that the case complies with the minimum ATA requirements for a case of this size and type. All alhva cases, including the exorack, are shipped as a bag, and are within ATA compliance.
Understanding the "U" in Portable Racks
The width and height of rack-mountable equipment is standardized internationally by manufacturers in the audio industry. At the center of this pattern is the unit, or rack space. A rack space is defined internationally as 1.75" top to bottom and 19" wide.
Rack space - top to bottom
Rack equipment has a standard called rack unit, and 1.75″ is the height of 1 unit (1U) equipment. Thus, the height of the equipment is now measured in rack units, where one unit (1U) is 1.75", 2U is 3.5" and so on. Alhva exoracks are constructed without holes, and their rails allow mounting of equipment of any height of unit.
Rack Space - Left to Right
From left to right, rack unit spaces are 19″ wide. Some equipment is also described as 1/2 or 1/3 rack unit. From left to right in a rack, one piece of 1U rack, two pieces of 1/2 rack unit, or three pieces of 1/3 rack unit can respectively fit.
The Alhva 4-unit Alhva exorack has snap rails at the top and bottom, and if placed in a vertical position, it can also accommodate 1/2 U equipment.
Rack Accessory Needs
- rack screws
- Although there is not much technical talk involved with rack screws, it is important to note that alhva racks do not have holes. The connection of the screw that secures the interface to the rack is through a nut that is recessed and slides on the rail. It is important for you to know that the nuts that come with the exoracks are M6 standard and the groove depth is 6mm. Thus, the 8mm M6 screws that come with the exorack should handle the vast majority of existing interfaces, which have a 2mm "ear". There are some interface models with a more robust earplate, for example the Focusrite 6mm interfaces. In these cases you will need longer length M^ screws. Alhva also supplies, through Legal Parts, different types of screws as optional accessories with different types of heads. You can prefer Phillips screws, slotted or alen, square heads or Torx, as long as in M6 standard and with length according to your equipment. Finally, be sure to use washers so you don't scratch your equipment (a condition known as rack rash).
Rack Drawers
Planning a drawer in your rack may not be vital for great sound, but it's certainly a useful place to put all the other things that need to be with your gear, like a tape measure, headphones, your SPL meter, tester cable, remote controls and hearing protection. If you need drawers or even external bags, please contact us for more information.
Rack Shelves From time to time
, you may want to place equipment in your rack that is not designed to be rack mounted. Alhva also has solutions for these situations. Whether you need to temporarily place them or permanently attach them, Alhva rack shelves will be the solution. If you need rack shelves in your rack, please contact us and let us know the measurements of the equipment(s) you need to rack and we will help you find the best option.
