Protective clothing for gardening.

Garden work safety.
Can anyone imagine a more pleasant and welcoming place than a garden? The grass, the plants, the aroma and color of the flowers. It is, without a doubt, an environment that transmits peace and tranquility. But also that it requires a lot of care.

If you garden (either for pleasure or because it is your livelihood), you will know how difficult it is to maintain this space and the amount of work it requires. Thus, having good protective equipment is essential to ensure that there is no risk. Do you want to know what are the fundamental pieces of a gardener? We will tell you.

Main elements of protective clothing for gardening.

- Dungarees and anti-cut pants : they are made of highly resistant materials that protect the body from any possible friction with a chainsaw. They are flexible and available in various sizes.

- Anti-cut jacket : it is the essential complement for bibs and pants. They also incorporate additional protection for the arms, chest and abdomen.

- Anti-cut sleeve: it is another piece of equipment necessary to avoid cuts. Covers part of the hand, wrist and forearm. It is comfortable and manageable and must have a clamping mechanism to prevent it from moving.

- Protective glasses: eye protection involves wearing glasses that do not subtract any angle of vision and that cover the entire eye area. Ideally, they should be adjustable and fit the face perfectly. Also that they are light to avoid the sensation of fatigue and tiredness.

- Safety helmet: the simplest ones hardly protect the cranial area, but there are other much more sophisticated helmets that include a front metal mesh and hearing protection that dampens the sound that comes from the chainsaw .

- Anti-cut gloves: no matter how many tools a gardener uses, his hands will always be the most important of all. That is why it is essential to take care of them with good gloves that avoid cuts, scratches and scratches, either with the pruner, the chainsaw or with the same branches of the trees and plants.

- Boots: footwear with a shock-resistant toe, a non-slip sole and that is resistant to heat and absorbs energy. Some even incorporate a technology that dissipates electrostatic charges. It is important that they are waterproof to keep the foot dry and well cared for. For working with chainsaws, there are even specific anti-cut footwear, very suitable for these tasks.

Don't neglect your protection when gardening.
As you can see, the protective equipment for gardening work is quite extensive and consists of many pieces. Here we have named the most important ones, but there are still some accessories missing such as the tool belt, the shin guards or the hearing protectors. There is nothing further from the truth than a gardener in shorts, sandals and pruning shears. Therefore, if you dedicate yourself to gardening, it is best not to skimp when buying the products that offer you the best guarantees. Become a true professional by acquiring equipment with which to perform your work in the best possible way. Remember that it is your physical integrity that is at stake!

Protective clothing: work safely in the garden

Carrying out gardening work or tasks is a very beautiful and fun work but despite that in some cases it can be dangerous if we do not take adequate precautionary measures. Working with heavy and sharp tools , walking on slippery surfaces, or using certain chemicals can turn a peaceful afternoon of yard work into an unpleasant visit to the ER.

Most people, as they adjust to doing any type of work, tend to forget to take the necessary precautions into account. Gardening is no exception, especially when many of the garments designed for these activities limit movement, make you uncomfortable, and are unattractive.

That was the starting point for the McCulloch design team to decide to bring a fresh vision to the garment scene for DIYers and gardeners. "We have managed to make a fusion between good design and safety at work, offering as a result a line of protective clothing with style, that you want to wear, and that allows you to move without any limitation ”.

The range includes different types of pants (at the waist, with braces, to put on the pants themselves ...), 100% polyester, reinforced against cuts in the use of chainsaws, and resistant to water and wind, which allow a good ventilation, and perfect breathability. Also available is a new , light and solid 100% polyester jacket , adjustable in size, waterproof and windproof, offering good protection and optimum comfort when working in difficult conditions.

Among the accessories also stand out a pair of natural rubber boots with a steel toe and a reinforced area at the sole , resistant to water, with protection in the ankles area and against cuts, and an ergonomic shape, to be able to put them on and remove them easily. For its part, the new gloves also add protection adapted for the use of chainsaws, together with the reinforced leather palm and the water-repellent polyester back.

Also to help you prevent risks when working with machinery which emits a high level of noise, the range also has a full helmetwhich includes a mesh visor and 2 adjustable ear muffs Recommended to be used in conjunction with McCulloch scratch resistant goggles.

How to choose your gardening wardrobe

Any fan of gardening can wear a dungarees, an apron and wear a hat or a gardener's hat, clogs or boots, a multi-pocket vest and a raincoat. They are usually breathable, warm or light garments. Always depending on the manufacturing material. We help you choose.

Gardener's clothing
Appropriate clothing is recommended to  protect against physical , chemical and biological risks (insect bites) associated with  gardening . Therefore, the choice cannot be made lightly: apron, trousers, overalls, T-shirt, vest, jacket, as well as specific garments for cold and rain.

To choose, you must first apply  basic criteria  valid for all garments: choice based on the  season ,  size ,  material  and  ease of maintenance . Next comes  comfort :  freedom of movement , presence of  pockets , hood etc.

On the other hand, you will have to adapt your  gardening clothing  depending on the type of work you do in the garden. In any case, it is always preferable to have  tear resistant garments . And if you spend a lot of time on your knees, don't hesitate to add  knee pads  to your outfit.

Gardener apron
To take care of your  plantations  (water, plow, remove weeds, etc.) or to collect the fruit you will need a  gardener's apron . Long and wide, it is essential to  guarantee the protection and comfort  of the gardener.

It should be made of  thick,  sturdy fabric to cope with setbacks.

For greater functionality, choose a transformable apron that, thanks to its  kangaroo pocket , quickly becomes a bag to transport your first tomatoes, for example. A laminated apron reinforces protection and is particularly  effective against moisture . It will surely be more comfortable if you work in the cool of the dew.

Gardener overalls and overalls
More practical than the apron, the  gardener's overalls and bibs offer total comfort  and protection (against dirt, cuts, chemicals, etc.). Does your job need specific protection? Then you will need a specific bib: one  with knee pads  for jobs that are carried out bent or a  protective bib resistant to oil and fuel stains  that can occur when handling power tools.

Long and short gardener trousers
Long or short leg? Even if it is hot and sunny, some jobs require  long trousers :  trousers with pockets on the thighs  for tasks performed on your knees (as well as bibs with knee pads) or  trousers with reflective elements  if you work in a place of public transit , like the shoulder of a highway.

Gardener shirt or t-shirt
To complete the first layer of protection , wear a  shirt or T-shirt with or without sleeves . Since the t-shirt can be worn under a  shirt , it is recommended to choose a  cotton model, which is  more breathable.

From a practical point of view, the shirt is more useful because it can have pockets on the chest, and also because it can be unbuttoned if the heat is pressing. Both one and the other must be  resistant to rubbing .

Gardener hoodies and sweatshirts
Although its function is to keep you warm, choose  natural and breathable materials to wick away sweat. If they are padded , even better to conserve heat. Other criteria:  resistance to abrasion , good  thermal insulation  and  resistance to washing  (something necessary so that the properties of your jersey fabric  do not change after several visits to the washing machine).

Gardener jacket and vest
Both create a  true protection adapted to each season  according to its materials: against the rain and against the cold . When choosing the jacket, it is recommended to opt for one with  rip sleeves .

As for the  vest , go for a lightweight one with  multiple pockets . High visibility colors or tapes   are best suited for gardening on public roads.

Gardener protection from rain
The fundamental characteristic of clothing for rain  ( jumpsuit or two-piece set) is its  degree of impermeability .

The ability to evacuate moisture (or vapor) is the second criterion for maintaining correct body temperature.

Workwear for gardeners

Working in a garden or in a park implies having to take care of certain details so that our work can be effective. Today we will talk about the different elements that should be taken into account when working in gardens and urban parks.

What to consider when choosing work clothes as a gardener

- In the first place, the clothing that we use will have to have some protection, since it will be frequent that we work with branches of trees or bushes and if we wear not resistant clothes it can break easily . Special clothing for this type of profession is sold, usually a set or a work overalls. There are those who also prefer to opt for an apron: it is also valid because it protects a large part of the body and prevents not only the clothes from tearing but also prevents us from getting stained.

- Regardless of the clothing, it must meet one characteristic: it must be easy to wash and dry . Especially the second, since in case of working with water it is possible that we get wet and if only by watering the plants we get soaked and we do not dry out quickly, then we could catch a cold. Therefore, we must avoid being made of pure cotton fabrics because it retains a lot of moisture. In addition, working in gardening involves getting stained often, so we will have to wash work clothes very often.

- Elements to protect ourselves: depending on the type of tasks we have to do, there are some elements that cannot be missing from our clothing:

-  Gloves : a good gardener knows that gloves are one of the most essential accessories in their day to day. They help not only to manipulate plants or flowers but also branches, shrubs, materials such as soil or fertilizers, etc. Depending on the type of task, one or the other is recommended, since the protection levels will vary according to their use.

-  Helmet or hat : the use of a helmet is basically in case the tasks to be carried out involve dangerous movements such as cutting large logs or climbing trees to maintain branches and fruits. Sometimes a hat can be enough depending on what cases. Also, if you work from sunrise to sunset, it will be important to use it to protect us from solar radiation and possible heat stroke (we must remember to drink liquid continuously to hydrate our body).

- Protective glasses : as in the previous point, the case of protective glasses will depend a lot on the work that is carried out. If, for example, we must trim bushes and we do not want a splinter to jump in our eye, the proper use of glasses will be of vital importance.

- Belt to carry tools or large pockets : it will save you the fact of having to be up and down with the tool box.

- Finally, we must not forget the base: the feet. Choosing good professional footwear can help us avoid accidents. It will also depend on the tasks, but the most important thing is that it is non-slip, since in gardening there is usually a lot of humidity and everything possible should be done not to slip.
