To avoid health problems and, above all, to keep them in the best condition, it is recommended to clean the pillows at least once a month.

Pillows are one of those household items that need special maintenance to be kept in hygienic conditions and suitable for regular use.

1. Baking soda and vinegar


A mixture of baking soda with white vinegar results in a totally natural product, perfect for whitening and softening pillow fabrics. Ingredients

  • 8 tablespoons of baking soda (80 g).
  • ½ cup of white vinegar (125 ml).


Preparation

  • Put the pillows in the washing machine and, when the water covers them, add the baking soda and white vinegar.
  • Let the cycle complete and, when finished, let them dry in the sun.



2. Hot water and lemon juice

  • It is no secret to anyone that fresh lemon juice is one of the most effective antibacterial and disinfectant agents that nature offers us, as stated in this study by the University of Benin (Nigeria). Therefore, it is not surprising that it is also one of the best allies to leave the pillows fresh and impeccable.


Ingredients

  • The juice of 6 lemons.
  • 2 ½ liters of water (10 cups).


Preparation

  • Put the water to heat and, when it boils, add the juice of 6 fresh lemons.
  • Gently submerge the pillow and, if necessary, add more water, until it is completely covered.
  • Let it soak for 2 hours and then wash it with your regular detergent.



3. Baking soda and tea tree essential oil


  • By combining ingredients such as baking soda and tea tree essential oil we can make a dry detergent to take care of our pillows. This product facilitates the removal of yellow stains and, thanks to its antibacterial action, removes mites and bacteria.


Ingredients

  • ½ cup of baking soda (80 g).
  • 10 drops of tea tree essential oil.


Preparation

  • Pour the baking soda into a bowl and mix it with the tea tree essential oil.
  • After obtaining a uniform product, spread it on the pillow and let it rest for 45 minutes.
  • After this time, rub the remains with a brush and remove the excesses.


4. Detergent and borax

The detergent and borax hack has become quite popular around the world as one of the best preparations to leave pillows free of damage and as new.

  • Its properties eliminate the remains of sweat and other particles that, little by little, leave stains that are difficult to erase.
  • They also have powerful antimicrobial properties that help kill mites, bacteria, and other undesirable microorganisms.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup of detergent (250 g).
  • ½ cup of borax (80 g).
  • 1 cup of biodegradable dish soap (250 ml).
  • Hot water (the amount that is necessary).
  • 1 cup of bleach, without chlorine (250 ml).


Preparation

  • First of all, remember that it is necessary to take precautionary measures to avoid poisoning . Thus, the use of gloves and face masks is recommended.
  • Then add the products mentioned in the washing machine.
  • Add one or two pillows inside the machine and, after adding hot water, start the usual cycle.
  • When finished, put them to dry in the sun so they do not acquire a musty smell.


5. Hydrogen peroxide and lemon


  • The mixture of hydrogen peroxide with lemon allows us to achieve a homemade antimicrobial with powerful active ingredients that eliminate sweat and saliva stains from white pillows.


Ingredients

  • ½ cup of lemon juice (125 ml).
  • 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide (250 ml).


Preparation

  • Add the ingredients to a bucket of hot water and soak the pillow for an hour.
  • After the indicated time, rinse in the usual cycle of the washing machine and put it to dry in the sun.


Keep your pillows clean!

To keep your pillows in excellent condition for longer, you can use the tricks that we have already mentioned. However, remember to also wash the bedding regularly and, after 2 years, change the pillow for a new one.
