What are holographic nails
Holographic nails are one of the hottest trends in the world of manicure and nail art. It is about covering your nails with a paint with iridescent effects so that they change the color depending on the angle of the light. This gives them an amazing 3D effect that shines wherever you go.

This effect can be achieved directly by using a holographic paint, but it can also be done by applying holographic illuminating powders over the base paint. This way, you can achieve the holographic effect with any of your nail paints.

In any case, you can buy holographic nail paints in any beauty store, as they are very fashionable and it is not without reason. Here's how to make your own holographic nails!

How to do holographic nails step by step
Achieving the holographic effect on your nails takes patience and some practice. Of course, you can also do it in a specialized manicure center. They will surely use UV lamps to achieve that beautiful iridescent glow. However, it is possible to do it at home and here we explain how. Write down what you will need:

  • A base coat
  • An enamel in the color of your choice
  • Holographic or Chrome Nail Powders
  • A very shiny top coat enamel
  • Sponges for shadows
  • Acetone and cotton

Two caveats before you start doing your holographic nails:

If you are not very experienced, choose a white or silver nail polish color. That way mistakes will be less noticeable while you practice.
Make sure the base coat has a "sticky" finish. That is, when it dries completely, when you touch the nail you notice a sticky or slimy sensation.
We recommend doing your nails when you have a lot of free time, as the process for holographic nails is a bit long if you don't have holographic paints. Let's do it!

  • Clean your hands and nails very well. Run a cotton ball with acetone over the nails to remove grease and let them dry completely.
  • Now, cover the skin around the nails with cream or another product. Working with holographic powders can be a bit of a messy job.
  • Apply the base coat and let it dry for a few minutes.
  • Paint the nails with the polish color you chose. Allow it to dry completely.
  • When the paint is dry, apply a second coat of the base coat. Wait for it to be completely dry once more.
  • It is time to apply the nail powder. Use a makeup sponge or an eyeshadow applicator. With the sponge, take some powder and press it gently against the nail. Remember that it is a delicate process and should be used just enough. Rub it very gently. This way you will achieve a better effect.
  • By putting a thin layer of powder, you may think you need to add a lot more. Don't give in to temptation or the effect will be lost. Rather, cover again with the base coat. Of course, that layer must be applied safely and in a single pass. Using the brush again could damage the holographic effect on your nails.
  • Once the base coat is dry, repeat with the holographic powders. Rub again very gently. You may want to repeat this step a third time for a more intense effect, but remember, the thicker the coat of paint, the less it will last.
  • Once the last layer of powder is finished, shine each nail with the top coat. It is important that this glaze is very shiny.
  • Ready! Now take care of your nails so that they last around 7 to 10 days, depending on the care you give them. We leave you more nail art ideas to inspire you in our Easy Nail Designs article.

Holographic Nail Designs
Now that you have mastered the technique of holographic nails, you just have to put a little creativity to take advantage of the iridescent effect and create unique designs that will give a lot to talk about. If you don't know how to start or want to get inspired, here we bring you several holographic nail designs with the best ideas and images so that you can start using your talent with this new style.

Elegant holographic nails
That they are such striking nails does not mean that holographic nails cannot be elegant. In fact, everything is in the colors and shape of the nail you choose.

For example, an oval nail with a base of white polish and powders of the same color, give a clean and sufficiently discreet appearance. You can also use other polishes in neutral and sober colors, such as old pink or beige.

Blue holographic nails
If you want to take advantage of the rainbow effect of holographic nails, the color blue is excellent to achieve designs that recall the clouds, the sky and the sea. You can apply the holographic powder to one nail and make a cloud design on another, as well as use various shades of blues and purples that go beautifully with a navy or royal blue hue.

Dramatic holographic nails
For a more dramatic holographic polish design, use a base polish and dark holographic powders. It is much better if the powder has two or three shades with the change of the light. One option is purple with blue, green, or violet undertones. They are more impressive on almond nails or pointed nails (stiletto).

Black holographic nails
The holographic manicure is also perfect for creating designs that are inspired by the stars, the galaxy and the night sky. Combining holographic powders with a black polish will give your nails a dramatic, elegant and very showy look. You can paint only one of the nails with holographic polish or make a gradient between both polishes.

If you want to learn how to create a beautiful gradient with your favorite polishes, go to our article How to make a gradient on nails.

Contrast holographic nails
What if holographic nails are a detail of the manicure? It is only necessary to apply the holographic effect on one nail of each hand. It is almost always on the ring finger, although it is not required. In the others, you leave only the base and put a matte top coat for greater contrast.

If you want the contrast to show up on each nail, you can do a classic French manicure and apply the holographic effect only on the tip. Your nails will look longer and very striking.
