How to build a storage bench?

If clutter is threatening to take over your life, organize yourself with a storage bench for your foyer, hallway, bedroom or mudroom. You'll enjoy building this easy-to-make, low-cost storage bench. Cheap wicker baskets form the drawers, so there's no need to build complicated drawers from scratch. As it is also a bench with a soft cushion, it is the ideal place to put on boots and shoes. In no time, you'll have this storage bench finished and filled with all the loose items you wanted to tame.

What will you need
Equipment / Tools

  1.     Circular saw
  2.     Measuring tape
  3.     Pencil
  4.     miter saw
  5.     oscillating sander
  6.     Fine grain sandpaper (#220)
  7.     Jigsaw
  8.     speed square
  9.     hearing protection
  10.     eye protector
  11.     wood glue
  12.     4 wooden clamps
  13.     tack cloth
  14.     cordless screwdriver
  15.     Brush tool

Materials

  •     2 square wicker baskets 31 cm long, 31 cm wide and 31 cm high
  •     1 selected pine panel, 2.50 cm by 31 cm by 8 meters
  •     1 selected pine panel, 2.50 cm by 5.10 cm by 8 meters
  •     white primer
  •     Glossy or semi-glossy white paint
  •     1 box finishing nail
  •     1 pillow, 61cm long by 30cm wide
  •     4 feet of solid wood

Instructions

    cut the wood

Using the circular saw and wearing ear and eye protection, cut two pieces of pine board 2.5 cm by 31 cm by 8 meters. Each piece must be 66 centimeters long. Then cut three more pieces, each a foot long. Leave that aside for now.
  •     Create the cutouts for the side pieces

Two of the 12-by-1-inch pieces cut earlier will have smaller square cutouts cut out in the center. These cutouts are for aesthetic purposes only. If desired, you can leave the side pieces solid.

Draw a smaller square with the Square of Speed, leaving two inches of wood around the perimeter. Cut out this center with the puzzle.
  •     Build central bank support

Construct the basic shape of the bench with the two 66 cm pieces and the other 31 cm pieces. With the materials set aside, center the solid 31cm piece directly in the middle of the two 66cm pieces: in the center at 33cm. Add a thin drop of wood glue. Nail in place.
  •     Build the bench side pieces

With the materials still set aside, add a thin layer of glue and place the two 12-inch cut-out pieces at each end, stepping back 2.5 cm each for a polished look. Nail in place. Fasten together with wooden clips. Allow the glue to cure for two hours.
  •     add stool feet

Turn the bench upside down. Screw the four wooden bench legs into place. It may be necessary to create pilot holes before screwing in the feet.
  •     Measure the cushion rails
  •     Nail the three cushion rails into place on top of the storage bench

Remove the wooden clamps and stand the bench upright. Place the cushion on top of the bench. Use the cushion as a reference point to mark measurements for the board rail one by two. Generally, this will be 64 centimeters for the rear grille, with two side pieces that are about 30 centimeters each. As pillows vary slightly in size, these rails must be cut to accommodate the pillow.

Taper side cushion rails

Cut the three rails from the pillow to the right size. Set the long piece aside. With the miter saw, taper the ends of the two side rails. This is done to make them more attractive and to smooth out sharp, angular edges.

Build pad rails

Nail the three cushion rails into place on top of the storage bench. Be sure to back off the cushion rails slightly (provided there is enough space due to the cushion) to give the seat a cleaner look.

Sand the storage bench

Place #220 grit sandpaper on the oscillating sander. Wearing ear and eye protection, sand the wood well in all visible areas. Sand towards the grain. On the cushion rails, sand the sharp edges and corners for comfort.

clean the bench

Use the tack cloth to gently scrub the storage bench. Do not press hard on the tack cloth or you run the risk of sticking beeswax into the wood. Continuously expose new, fresh areas of the tack cloth for better adhesion.

Paint Storage Countertop

As the countertop is made of pine board, which is highly porous, primer is required. With the brush, paint the worktop with two coats of primer, letting the primer dry for two hours between each coat. When the primer is cured, paint the countertop with at least two coats of semi-gloss or gloss acrylic latex paint.
