How to choose the perfect cycling shoes

How to choose the perfect cycling shoes

It is not an easy task to choose new cycling shoes, since we must take into account the price, the construction materials, that they are comfortable and that we like the design.

- How to choose the perfect cycling shoes and products

The first thing you should know is if you want or need a road shoe or a MTB one.

Shoe sole
At first glance, the main difference would be the sole. Road shoes have a soft, smooth sole that is not exactly designed for walking, while the sole of MTB shoes have a rough sole that is a bit easier, and safer, to walk.

In addition to this difference, there is another important one which is the number and position of the shoe's screws. The road ones will have 3 screws and the MTB ones two, this is important because the type of shoe that we buy will define the type of pedal that we will use.

If you are not sure what type of cycling you are going to practice, or you practice both, then some MTB shoes will be more “useful” in your case.

Road Shoes
One of the most discussed variables in the case of road shoes is their rigidity or flexibility. As a general rule, it is believed that the stiffer the sole of the shoe, the more power we are able to transmit to the pedals, as a negative point to this, we could say that the more rigid the shoes, the greater the vibrations they transmit to us. uneven terrain, this can accelerate fatigue for less experienced riders.

Broadly speaking, we could say that the higher the price of a cycling shoe, the stiffer its sole will be.

The lowest cost shoes usually have a Nylon sole, while the intermediate level ones are made with a mixture of Nylon and carbon, leaving the higher priced ones until last, whose construction is usually exclusively carbon.

Another advantage that we can find in carbon soles, apart from its rigidity, is the lightness that this material provides.

Upper or body of the shoe
Most sneakers are made of synthetic materials, with the usual exception of top sneakers. In this case, these are usually made with Kanguro leather, why this leather, because it is light, fits perfectly to the foot and they turn out to be of an amazing comfort.

Leaving aside the materials, there are two variables that every cyclist should take into account when buying their shoes, these are ventilation and cleanliness.

Those shoes that have a mesh cover will provide much superior ventilation, but have the disadvantage that they are usually more difficult to keep clean.

A good alternative to mesh is the ventilation holes, they do their job by preventing the foot from “overheating”, and they are also easier to clean.

Closing systems

BOA
The BOA system is very common and it is very easy for us to find it among our group mates. Why is it so common? Because it is fast, easy and gives the rider confidence.

An example of these shoes would be the Scott MTB RC Ultimate. Simply spectacular! A 10 in everything, even in the Discount. You can see them here.

Laces
The laces have become a bit obsolete in the case of road shoes, although they are experiencing a golden return and we can find them in shoes with a slightly more retro design, if they are more common among cyclists who enjoy All Mountain or Gravity cycling.

One of the advantages they offer is the level of adaptation that they provide throughout the entire shoe. While one of the disadvantages is that they cannot be adjusted while we are shooting and that they consume a little more time when adjusting.

As examples of lace-up shoes we would have the Specialized 2FO CLIP that right now have a 56% Discount !!!

We did not want to leave out triathlon shoes. Everything we have discussed is related to this type of shoe in the same way as it is to road or MTB shoes, the main difference being in the case of the triathlon shoes that these are, we can easily take them off while riding the bike, creating a better transition from bike to race.

Among our favorite triathlon shoes, we could not miss the Specialized Trivent 2018. Beautiful, comfortable and among the favorites of triathletes, you can also find it with a 26% discount on our website!

Specialized Girl Shoes

One of the drawbacks they have is that since they are easy to put on and take off, they do not hold the foot as well as other shoes do. In addition to this, triathlon shoes usually have many ventilation holes, what must be taken into account if we are going to go out a lot in winter, the main reason for so many holes? They are so that the water that has remained after doing the swimming part comes out.

Remember that the most important thing is that the shoe fits well to your foot and is comfortable. Try them with cycling socks and only with one pair, if you see that you need two to fit correctly, look for a smaller size or a shoe with similar characteristics, but that is not yours;)

Another good way to check if the shoe fits correctly is, once it is on and fastened, to rest the shoe on the ground on the big toe, lifting the heel, so that we can see if the heel tends to slip or is well adjusted, holding the foot safely and correctly.
