The best gardening tools for beginners

When we enter gardening as beginners, we open ourselves to a new world, we learn to explore practical options, and we definitely get very creative . Starting from scratch means that we do not have the basic gardening tools , and that we have to fix it with implements from the house that help to solve a little the needs of a beginning gardener .

It's great to start with kitchen scissors, laundry room buckets, and great improv ideas that only a passion for gardening and plants can give us. However, we always reach a point where we cannot keep improvising garden tools by taking out ladles from the kitchen to use as shovels, or the forks to use as rakes.♀️

If you have reached that point where your garden is crying out for you to use specialized gardening tools or you just want to start with everything well assembled from the beginning, do not ignore this post because here you will find the guide you need to choose the precise garden tools for you.

Must-see gardening tools
Although each garden is different and the care needs of your plants vary a lot from garden to garden, there are a couple of gardening tools that we cannot miss if we want our garden work to be much easier and more precise.

Gardening gloves
Many times we underestimate the power of gardening gloves, but the truth is that they are of great help when we work in the garden. Gloves, as a gardening tool, are our best ally when dealing with thorny plants such as roses, vines, cacti or any type of plant that can create an allergic reaction on our skin.

They are also perfect when we prepare soil, transplant, deal with certain pests, and move leftovers from pruning.

Hand scissors
Only when this gardening tool is acquired does one realize how much he needed it, and it is not only for the luxury of having specialized scissors for pruning and harvesting, it is that the cuts really cost much less work and do not hurt plant as normal scissors can . ✂️

What we should always look for in these hand scissors or pruning shears, as they are also often called, is that they fit the size of your hand, that the grip is comfortable and that their blades are interchangeable or that they can be sharpened so that you can always get clean and precise cuts.

Hand shovel
Within the basic kit of gardening tools the hand shovel cannot be missing, it is the best ally for transplants and garden designs; as well as being precise for digging, removing soil and mixing substrates.

There are two types of super useful hand shovels, one is the pointed one and the other is the flat one and although it is good to have them, if you are starting in the world of gardening with a pointed shovel it will be enough for you , as it is suitable for all types of substrates and allows you greater ease to make holes in the earth and remove deep substrate.

Water sprayer
The sprayer or water sprayer is a fundamental gardening tool, since it is of great help when we fight against the pests that attack our garden. The sprayer will allow us to apply the products evenly on the affected plants and combat the plague.

In addition, if you have plants that need a high humidity level, the water spray will allow you to increase the humidity in the environment for both your outdoor and indoor plants .

Garden gouge
Somewhat unknown to beginners in the garden, the gouge is the gardening tool that will allow us to fight against weeds. Its shape is specially designed to be able to remove weeds from the roots and prevent them from coming out again.

Being a tool that goes deep into the earth, it is very important that it be of good quality. The most recommended material is stainless steel with a wooden handle with good grip.

Watering can for plants
Water is something that cannot be lacking in our garden, that is why the watering can for plants has to be part of your garden tools. Although the most modern or the best-designed watering can is not necessary, it is necessary that you contemplate a good size container that can distribute the water without removing the soil or mistreating your plants .

Gardener apron
The gardening apron may seem like a luxury when we talk about gardening tools for beginners, however in addition to putting you in the mood to “garden” it will be a great ally to easily transport the hand tools with which you are working, and it will also prevent you from stain your clothes too much.

Wide brim hat
Although it is not exactly a gardening tool as such, I assure you that you will appreciate having included it in your gardening kit . Exposure to the sun for long hours can cause problems on our skin such as burns or affect us in other ways with headaches, vision discomfort and less resistance to work in the garden.

If you have already been working on a project in your garden such as decoration, pruning, maintenance or simply walking around and observing your plants, you will know that the sun can be a factor that makes you want to run away.

Gardening tools for small and medium gardens

If you are a beginner in the garden, the safest thing is that your first steps will be with a small or medium garden. For these types of gardens, which generally have a section of small grass or soil in the ground and not just in pots, you could use these extra garden tools.

Hedge pruning shears
If your garden has small spaces with grass, shrubs and hedges, you should consider this gardening tool. The hedge trimmer is a large scissor that allows us to perform foliar pruning without further complication . She will be your best friend when you realize that your bushes grow quickly and need constant pruning.

Garden fork
The garden fork together with the hand rakes fulfill the function of helping us to aerate the compost, mix the soil and stir it . When we work in small or medium gardens, we often deal with a little heavier soil, and that is why the quality of these gardening tools must be good so that they do not break when we work with heavy soils.

Rakes
When we talk about rakes, we mean rakes that we can use standing up. This gardening tool will be a great relief to your back and knees when you have to work with slightly larger patches of soil.

The rake, like the garden fork and the hand rake, will help us to stir and spread the soil evenly and to mix large amounts of substrate .

In the market we can find two types of rakes, the metal one that fulfills the function that we have just explained, and the plastic rake that is perfect for sweeping the leaves and the leftover pruning.

Large shovels
The large shovel generally comes hand in hand with the metal rake , since they are garden tools that complement each other when carrying out work to remove large amounts of soil, mix substrates and in general everything that has to do with preparing the soil for planting.

Gardening tools for large gardens
If you have decided to take care of your garden and it is a large size, I want you to know that you are a being of challenges. For these types of gardens you will need garden tools a little more pro , that if you do not have them it is possible that the impulse to take care of your garden becomes a bit tedious experience.

Since we don't want that to happen, here is an extra list of gardening tools that you may need if your garden is large. Remember that these are suggestions and that you should choose your gardening implements according to your real needs.

High branch scissors
These scissors are like the handheld pruning shears we talked about earlier, however they feature a much longer handle so you can reach high branches . If your garden has medium-sized trees, this will be a precise gardening tool for pruning and reproduction by cutting.

Wheelbarrow
If your garden is large, you will already imagine why the wheelbarrow. This large garden tool will help you easily transport material from one side to the other . You can transport your tools, large amounts of soil, the leftovers from pruning or new plants for your garden.

Pruner
If your yard has a sizeable patch of grass, the mower is a must-have gardening tool. Grass grows very fast and needs constant maintenance.

The size of the mower or lawn mower will depend on the size of your garden and the amount of grass area you have, you can choose models with different characteristics such as a "grass catcher" if you do not want to rake to collect the leftovers from the pruning.

Pruning saw
This one may be a bit off what a gardening beginner would do, but the truth is that there are beginners who measure up to everything and are simply willing to take on the challenges of the garden no matter what.

The pruning saw is a gardening tool used to cut large tree branches, it is ideal for removing branches that interfere with sunlight, that are sick or that represent a visual discomfort.

Gardening tools according to the type of irrigation
As we mentioned earlier, irrigation is essential in every garden, and deciding on an irrigation system can be decisive in its success or failure. That is why we have decided to include some of the most common gardening tools for watering the garden .

Hose and gun
The hose is a garden classic and, together with the spray gun, falls into the category of garden tools for manual watering.

Manual watering, either with a gun and hose or with a watering can, does not have great installation costs, it demands time from the gardener and perseverance to be able to keep the garden alive with constant watering . Although it is the simplest, it has a couple of disadvantages such as wasting water and the impossibility of leaving the garden for a few days, since there is no way for it to water itself.

Drip irrigation
Drip irrigation consists of drip irrigation of the plants, it is a very efficient method to save water and allows to protect the leaves from sunburn, since the water goes directly to the ground and does not splash the leaves .

Drip irrigation can be automatic and its installation is quite simple . There are different ways to implement it and it can be as simple as a few bottles buried in the ground to hoses that run through the garden with different water outlets or droppers.

Diffusion irrigation
Diffusion irrigation is also an irrigation system that will help us save water, its installation can be underground or superficial and to implement it we will only need a gardening tool called a diffuser and a hose.

This type of irrigation simulates rain and depending on the diffuser it can cover extensions between one meter and five meters.

Sprinkler irrigation
Sprinkler irrigation is recommended for large gardens, as its coverage is long-range thanks to higher water pressure. The installation is very similar to that of diffusion irrigation, with the only difference that it is recommended that it be underground.

The key gardening tool for this type of irrigation is a sprinkler which must be made of stainless steel if we want our investment to last as long as possible.

How to choose my garden tools?

Choosing our garden tools correctly is crucial, and we do not need to invest large amounts of money in them to last us, we only have to look at the construction details and the materials with which they are made.

For example, when buying, always look for stainless steel, with this you will ensure the longevity of your tools. It is also important that you look at the joints of your garden tools, such as scissors, it is very important that the joints look and feel firm and that they are not assembled with plastic screws or paste.

Another important point is the handles of utensils such as shovels, gouges and forks, it is most recommended that these are made of wood and that when you take them you feel firm and comfortable in the grip.

In general, you should look for the firmness of the assembly in your garden tools and opt for resistant materials , remember that a good quality purchase can save you a lot of headaches when you are working in the garden.

Main care for garden tools
Along with the quality of our tools, another important point for their durability is the care and maintenance that we give to our garden tools. Just as we dedicate time and effort to the care of plants, we must also dedicate it to the care of garden tools.

The maintenance of our garden tools is very simple and once integrated into the gardening routine you won't even notice it . There are four premises that you should always keep in mind: clean, dry, sharpen and lubricate.

Clean up
You should wash all garden tools after using them, as storing them with dirt or grime will cause them to start to rust, wear out, or lose their edge. It is best to use soapy water and a brush to easily remove any remaining residue.

On the other hand, if you have been working with diseased plants, it is best that once your tools are clean, give them a wipe with alcohol to eliminate any organism that can be transmitted to your other plants and make them sick.

Dry off
After washing and disinfecting your gardening tools, you should make sure to dry them completely. This can be accomplished by using a cloth or by leaving them in the shade in a cool, drafty place, which is best for tools with wooden handles.

Sharpen
Although it may seem obvious, many gardeners skip this step, sharpening our scissors will help us to always make precise cuts and with the least damage to the plant. To achieve this, you only need medium or coarse-grit sandpaper to pass it repeatedly over the edges of your garden tools.

Lubricate
To avoid wear, rust and dullness of our garden tools it is also important that we lubricate them. We achieve this by using a little cooking oil on the metal surfaces of our garden utensils and especially on the edges of the scissors once they are sharpened.

It is also important to take care of the wooden handles that we can lubricate once every three months using jojoba oil.

As a final advice, I just want to tell you to choose your tools carefully, analyze the needs of your garden and look for the options that meet that need. A good gardener is not one who is full of garden tools, but one who has the necessary to make his garden a paradise.

Gardening and Landscaping Tools What are they, how are they classified and how to put together a basic set?

Every time of the year involves some task related to the care of plants, flowers, trees, lawns, orchards, fruit fields, vineyards and green spaces in general, which is diversified not only by the multiplicity of plant species, but also by the type of work to do. For example, there are calendars for sowing, pruning, watering, weeding, preparing the land, adding fertilizer, aerating the soil or sand, and many other jobs that must be carried out within a certain date throughout the year.

These jobs require a series of indispensable tools . Some have been used for centuries; many have been modified with state-of-the-art technology, and others are completely new, all of which are now at the service of the user.

That is why it is important to know the  tools for gardening and landscaping , understand their usefulness and know what ergonomic, performance and / or safety features they incorporate to provide a comfortable, simple and fast work experience.

First of all, and as in any other area of technology, it is useful to note that garden tools are divided into two large groups: hand tools and power or fuel tools . In turn, the tools of both groups are subdivided according to their function.

To aid understanding, the infographic below provides a general classification of gardening and landscaping tools grouped precisely by function, where the blue boxes indicate hand tools, the green boxes denote power tools, and the yellow boxes indicate tools that can be both manual and electric.

In previous articles we have made an introduction to some of these tools and machines , for example: blast mowers , saws , axes , hoes , edgers , chainsaws , shovels , picks , wheelbarrows , blowers , pressure washers and water pumps . However, this time we are going to delve a little more about hand tools with specific application in gardening andlandscaping , which should not be missing in the toolbox , closet or shed of a hobbyist, temporary worker or professional.

Pair of scissors
The broad group of scissors comprises hand tools intended for two fundamental purposes: pruning and harvesting or harvesting in areas such as gardening, arboriculture, fruit growing, flower arranging, and nature conservation where careful habitat management is required.

We can divide this group into four fundamental tools , highlighting the various types and uses in the following graphic.

Saws
When it is not possible to use scissors because the diameter of the branch to be cut exceeds 40 mm, then saws should be used . Within the mountains there are two main groups that we present in the following graphic.

Knives and pocket knives
Small- scale pruning work , such as cutting and grafting, removing shoots, cutting bark and flowers, pruning young trees in nurseries, cutting small branches in fruit or delicate trees such as peach trees, or even the breaking of the soil to plant seeds is done with the use of knives and blades specially designed for these purposes.

Most pruning knives have a curved blade, although handle and blade sizes vary by model and manufacturer. Many also have a folding blade and / or a flat design, making it easy to conveniently store the knife in a pocket.

The knives support multiple uses that in addition to pruning include cutting flowers, rope, plastics and paper. They come with a practical sheath to be worn on the belt.

Some manufacturers also offer the well-known machetes , which feature a sturdy blade about 50 cm long, although the shape, thickness, and width of the machete vary by brand. They are very effective tools for cutting small branches and thick brush.

Axes
Axes are the most widely used hand tools for cutting trees, whether of branches or the trunk (felling), and therefore essential in a toolbox. The types of ax and the way to use it are concepts fully applicable to the case of gardening and landscaping . In this regard, we only need to distinguish the variants offered by some manufacturers:

  • Axes for cutting branches, felling small trees and garden tasks : they are between 60 and 70 cm long and their head weighs 1 kg. The blade is narrow, which allows it to easily penetrate the branch to be cut.
  • Axes for felling trees : they are a little longer and heavier than the previous ones, with a length between 70 and 90 cm and a head that weighs between 1.1 and 2.3 kg. The cutting edge is pronounced to easily penetrate the wood to be felled.
  • Breaker axes : they are to cut wood from trees already felled, for example, to obtain firewood. They measure between 80 and 90 cm and the head weighs between 2.0 and 3.5 kg. They have a thick head specially designed to break wood, which helps to penetrate the wood with less effort. Some are designed with a flat area on the head to be used as a wedge and are recommended for very hard, thick and difficult to chop woods.

Shovels, hoes and picks
On the list of must-have tools , shovels and hoes are paramount. If we work with stones or in lands with an abundance of these, the pick is also essential. Although there are different types of shovels , hoes and picks , those that are used particularly in gardening are those detailed in the graph below.

Wire rakes and brooms
Other essential elements for working and cleaning the floor are rakes . The market offers different types and with a variable number of tines. Within the group of rakes we can consider the wire broom , since it fulfills one of the various functions of the rake, that is, cleaning.

In the graph that follows we detail the most used types of rake.

Mini-tools
For those who are dedicated to small-scale gardening , the cultivation of exotic or delicate plants and flowers, greenhouse crops or those who have a farm or home garden, there is a team of mini-tools that will give great help to the tasks that demand this kind of activity. All these mini-tools are designed to work on the edges or under bushes, to care for rockeries, balconies and flower pots, and to eliminate weeds.

Some of these tools are the same as the ones we just saw, such as shovels, rakes, and hoes, but in a small size. Others are specific to their magnitude, such as cultivators and so-called pitchforks, forks or forks.

The functions of mini-shovels, hoes and rakes are basically identical to those of their larger peers, that is to say: prepare, flatten and level the ground around the plants, either by breaking, loosening and aerating; dig seeding or transplant furrows; extract weeds; plant, sow and distribute compost, etc.

The growers are a little more specific. They are used to break up compacted soil, spread fertilizers, and remove shallow weed roots in hard-to-reach areas without disturbing the roots of surrounding plants.

When preparing the ground for planting flowers and shrubs, growers loosen the soil, allowing it to aerate and allowing rain and heat to enter, which ensures a good development of the root system, and easily spread the compost.

The forks, yokes or forks are mini-tools that help remove weeds, especially those deep rooted, as dandelion, thistles and certain Umbelliferae.

They are also used to loosen, prepare and level the ground before planting, as well as to harvest root vegetables, such as radishes or carrots planted in small plots.

Irrigation and transport elements
Regardless of the tasks involved in both gardening and landscaping , the watering of the plants and the transport of various materials should always be carried out, for example, earth, stones, pruning residues, harvested fruits, plants, tools and many others.

Among the manual means available for these tasks there is a preferential place for at least three:

  • Hoses and Accessories : These can be wall mounted hoses, coiled hoses, hoses designed to withstand low temperatures, or self-coiling hoses.
  • Watering cans : or portable water containers for indoor and outdoor use, are constructed of plastic, metal, or even ceramic and are occasionally provided with a spray nozzle.
  • Wheelbarrows : with an average capacity of 170 liters, they can have one or two wheels. Although single-wheel models allow good maneuverability, the two-wheel design has better stability on the ground and is becoming a popular part for these types of applications.

Quick guide to putting together a gardening kit

With all the tools that we have mentioned in this article it can be inferred that putting together a complete gardening set implies a considerable investment. All the listed tools are useful and your choice will depend specifically on the tasks to be performed and the size of the garden or green space to be created and / or maintained.

The most reasonable thing is to acquire the tools little by little and as they are needed. In principle, a basic kit to start with should respond to the guidelines provided in the following infographic.

However, if the choice is to be prioritized even more, the tools to buy in the first instance are: hoe, shovel, hand scissors, wire broom, hose and edger . Do not forget in any selection a good pair of gardening gloves , another essential element for the user's safety.

As can be seen, some of the tools mentioned in this quick guide are electrical. The use of power tools is more widespread in landscaping than in gardening or horticulture, but pasture maintenance and weeding are common tasks in any area where there is a green space, no matter how small.

We will deal properly with these power tools in a future article .

Leather belts for gardening tools

The gardening tools hand as well as some accessories that we carry with us while we perform tasks planters, often become a headache when we leave for any place and never are where we need them .

Even when we are cautious and put the tools that we are going to need in a bag or basket, it often happens that when we move from one side of the garden to the other, we do it with one of the scissors in hand and the bag is left forgotten in place. where we start to work. When we miss another tool is when we realize that we have to go back to look for it again, and to each job done we add extra rides. I don't know if this is a garden rule, but I can say that it always happens to me. On the other hand, something can also happen is that some scissors end up piercing the back pocket of the pants.

But if there is one thing that makes these belts and their bags especially comfortable, it is because they allow us to have our hands free when we need it with just a small gesture, and I do not mean to leave the scissors anywhere, because, in all probability we will be able to find it later.

In these cases, using a belt for pruning shears and other accessories  is a fairly practical solution if we know how to choose the most suitable for our purpose. There are different models of bag-belts for gardening and floristry made of more or less resistant materials.

But today I wanted to show some examples of  belts designed to have only essential garden tools within reach , without adding any additional weight or strain on the back , and to allow us to feel comfortable when we walk in the garden. The uses that we can give them depend on each model, but they usually have space for pruning shears and scissors to cut flowers, the mobile phone (only if it is strictly necessary ...) and some other small accessories.

The belts that I show are all  handmade and the material used is leather. This means that the final price of the product is somewhat more expensive, but it also means that it will be a durable supplement that will stoically withstand exposure to the sun, wet and dry temperatures, and other outdoor conditions. If we take good care of it, it will age well and end up becoming one of those objects that we do not want to get rid of. A good gift to give to a special person, don't you think? Or maybe, why not, a gift to give ourselves. I am on It.

Irrigation Needs for Lawn

  • The good condition of any lawn is achieved if from the beginning we have given it the appropriate care. This is not limited exclusively to the soil preparation process because once we have worked the land and sowed the grass, the care in the irrigation will also be special.
  • Therefore, until the grass has grown and is fully settled, the watering needs will be different. Thus, in the first days, when the grass is freshly seeded, it is best to water at least twice a day, in such a way that the layer of soil that reaches up to 4 centimeters deep is moist. Depending on the temperature and the dryness of the environment we can water up to 3 and 4 times daily but with great care not to flood the earth.
  • As the first shoots appear, irrigation must be maintained, taking special care that these shoots do not dry out because this would ruin all the work previously done.
  • As soon as the grass reaches a height of approximately 2 centimeters, we will significantly decrease the frequency of irrigation and we will direct our efforts to try to allow the water to penetrate to a greater depth.
  • Gradually the watering rate decreases until it settles every time the grass has grown and we have had to cut it a couple of times.

In summer, at what time do I water the plants?

Solar radiation and the heat of the day can be real enemies for our plants, so you must understand why it is recommended not to water during the central hours of the day and thus keep your terrace or garden full of life.

If the plants require special care when watering them, during the summer season, even more so; And it is that it has been shown that watering plants when they are more exposed to the sun's rays and heat is counterproductive, because, in addition to having more evapotranspiration during the day and losing that received water, burns can occur on their leaves.

With the heat, better water first thing in the morning
Thinking that, because it is summer and it is hotter, plants need greater amounts of water is a big mistake. Abusing the water will only cause the earth to puddle, develop fungi, its roots to rot and even the plant to die. That is why it has been shown that the best time to water -most of the plants or grass in our garden is at dawn.

First thing in the morning is when they need this water the most, as it is the previous step to starting their metabolic activity. They need that boost of hydration, vitamins and nutrients to be able to face the intense day of heat and carry out their activities with greater performance. In addition, by watering at this time of day you will save water , since evaporation is minimal and the plants will take more advantage of that amount received, since it will have been drained before there is more sun exposure.

Although another option that has always been considered to water the plants is to do it at the end of the day , it has been shown that it is not highly recommended , since they may not even take advantage of it, since the plants - like us - reduce their metabolic activity, your performance and rest. Hence, they require more water in the morning to be able to stay active during the day. In addition, if it is watered in the evening, the soil will remain humid for a much longer time -due to the coolness and the dew at night- and it can favor the appearance of fungi.

Why can't I water them at noon?
It is quite obvious, in the hours in which there is a greater solar exposure, the insolation is maximum and this causes the water to evaporate more quickly , preventing it from fully feeding the plant and depriving it of its daily nutrients. In addition, the thermal change that cold irrigation water can produce in contact with its high interior temperature can greatly alter them.

On the other hand, a study has determined that if the leaves are wet during the central hours of the day, they may suffer slight burn marks , as a result of the magnifying glass effect generated by the drops themselves under solar radiation.

How to water the lawn

A dehydrated lawn can turn brown and brittle and even die. On the other hand, excess water expels the air from the ground, which leaves the grass without oxygen and at the risk of rotting. The secret to a great lawn is to keep it hydrated just enough at all times. You'll get the best results by watering it liberally, but not too often.

Signs of dehydration
In some climates, such as northern Europe, there is little or no need for irrigation. However, in warmer and drier parts of the world, the grass should be watered regularly so it doesn't dry out. Here are some signs that your lawn is getting dehydrated:

  • The grass changes color to a light green and subsequently turns yellow
  • The leaves curl and wither
  • Footsteps stay longer on the grass

When is it necessary to water?
The ideal time to water most varieties of lawns is first thing in the morning. The grass will have all day to dry and the water will not evaporate all at once, since the sun has not had time to warm the lawn. However, the least wasteful option is to water it at night. You just have to be careful with the amount of water, so that it does not adhere to the leaves of the grass at night and creates a perfect humid environment for fungi to proliferate.

How often and how much?
If it does not rain, the lawn should be watered twice a week, with between 10 and 15 millimeters each time. If the grass receives insufficient amounts of water continuously, the root system is forced to rise to the surface, where the water is, and therefore the grass becomes even more sensitive to drought. Use a rain gauge to check the amount of water the lawn has received. Also, adapt the irrigation rhythm to the type of soil the lawn is on, ensuring that the water has time to soak while the irrigation is in progress.

What equipment to use?
A sprinkler system is an easy and comfortable way to keep your garden hydrated. Sprinklers can be placed in the ground, on stands, or moved across lawns during irrigation. If you connect the sprinklers to a computerized irrigation system, you can even go on vacation with the peace of mind that the grass and plants will be well cared for.

Many lawns have areas that require more water than the rest. Install a rainwater tank and use the collected water to irrigate these areas by hand.

How to water plants saving water

Saving water is not only important for our pocket, since lower consumption is reflected in a cheaper bill each month, but it is also essential for the care of our planet. No one can doubt that water is one of our most precious assets and that we should not waste it.

To help you in this task, we offer you these tips on how to water your plants to save water , without forgetting those who enjoy a garden.

Reuse water

There is a way to save water that is sometimes overlooked. We refer to its reuse. We must not forget that plants do not need drinking water , so you can reuse rainwater or water that you have used to rinse or clean, as long as you do not have soap or detergent.

You can also take advantage of the water for cooking food , the water from the dehumidifier if you have it or the tap water that you let run while it is not hot.

With regard to rainwater, if your home allows it, you can place a watering can or a bucket on the terrace, balcony, patio or garden to collect it and then use it for watering. Another option is to prepare a water barrel or collector .

Select an efficient irrigation system

Garden sprinklers
Among the different irrigation systems that you can install to save water , the most efficient is the drip one. The drip system is a method that you can adopt both for pots as well as the garden or orchard, whatever the size. It helps to maintain the humidity level and it is not necessary to have a lot of water pressure.

However, if you only have a couple of plants or a small group of potted specimens, you can use a watering can by measuring the water to be spilled very well and taking advantage of what you collect from the rain or from other uses.

When it comes to grass , if you don't want to waste water, forget about the hose and schedule and place the sprinklers around the garden in a suitable way, so that it is spilled in the exact places and does not end up on walls, paths or branches. You will have to check frequently that it is properly adjusted so as not to be surprised when watering the garden . Finally, a good trick to know if the grass needs to be watered is to walk on it: if your footprints are marked, the grass asks for water.

Choose the best time to water the plants
Watering can
The chosen irrigation system will be of little use if you do it in full sun and with high temperatures, which will only make most of the water evaporate and not touch the ground. It is best to water when it is not windy outside, since this contributes to half of the water going elsewhere, as well as watering in the early hours of the day or at dusk . In addition to saving water, you will prevent the drops from serving as a magnifying glass and burning the leaves of the plants in hot weather.

Similarly, if it is outdoor plants and it has rained overnight or in the morning, keep in mind that it is very likely that you do not need to water, so save water for another day.

Lay down a cushioned floor
If you form a bed at the feet of the plant, with pine bark , gravel, mulch, straw or similar, you will help to keep moisture and the water does not evaporate at high speed. This option is especially useful in gardens, large pots and planters. In addition, if you leave the branches low and do not prune them, the soil moisture is also maintained, so you should only remove them when strictly necessary.

Group the plants according to their needs
If in your house there are many plants or a good garden and you have the possibility of distributing them thanks to the space you have, keep in mind that their placement will also help you save water. If you group the species that need a similar amount, it will facilitate irrigation by zones or even the most appropriate placement of a drip system .

Thus, organize a humid area , an intermediate area and a drier area . In addition, those specimens that need more water should be placed near the lawn, since it has to be watered frequently.

Also, keep in mind that the native plants are adapted completely to the environment, so they need less water , while other climatic zones may require more. In addition, the native flora contributes to caring for the environment, protecting biodiversity and avoiding invasive species .

Irrigation
If you want your lawn to be green and lustrous all summer, it is very important that you water it. The frequency of watering for your lawn depends on the temperature and humidity. When grass needs water, it begins to turn bluish and gray, and the older leaves of the plant begin to curl or wilt. If you have planted a new lawn, you will need to water it once a day so that the seeds can germinate and a strong root system can form. Today, new technologies allow you to water your lawn comfortably. You can water your garden manually or automatically, with partial or full automation. The GARDENA product range comprises stationary and mobile irrigation solutions, as well as irrigation pumps and controllers. If you wish, You can let your smart, programmable, automated sprinkler and irrigation systems do all the work. All you will have to do is program and position the sprinklers.

How to calculate lawn watering time?

When temperatures rise, the lawn needs water for its proper development. It can be supplied manually with a hose or through an automated underground irrigation system. This second option is the most effective because it allows you to control the watering time and the amount of water that is added to the garden. Learn  how to calculate lawn hazard time below .

To calculate the watering time, the following data must be taken into account.

1. Amount of water a lawn needs. It is estimated that a conventional lawn, on a permeable soil, in the hottest season and in the absence of rain, needs 10 liters of water per m2 per day to keep it green. Currently there are irrigation control systems via wifi or bluetooth  that can help save water in the garden.

2. Pressure and flow of water available in the garden. The pressure and flow data in the garden water intake are essential.

Pressure can be measured by placing a pressure gauge at the water outlet. The flow rate can be calculated by filling a container whose capacity is known in advance and measuring the time it takes to fill.

3. Flow supplied by the irrigation emitters. These can be sprinklers or diffusers, among others. Depending on the pressure and the nozzle of the irrigation emitter, they emit a certain amount of water. To know it, you must look at the information provided by the manufacturer.

For an example of how to calculate lawn watering time , here is a case study.

Suppose there is a 74 m2 lawn area watered with 12 sprinklers:

  • 4 90º sprinklers with T-1 nozzle that each supply a flow of 130 l / h
  • 8 180º sprinklers with T-3 nozzle that each supply a flow of 220 l / h

1. The total of the flows emitted by the 12 sprinklers is added.

Total flow: 2,280 liters per hour.

2. The  available flow per m2 is calculated .

74 m2 ................................................ ....... 2,280 l / h

  1 m2 ................................................ ....... X l / h                        X = 30 l / h / m2

The irrigation system supplies 30 liters per hour and per m2.

How long should the lawn be watered per day to supply the 10 l / h it needs?

30 liters ................................................ .....60 minutes

10 liters ................................................ ...... X minutes       X = 20 minutes a day

It is recommended to water in the early morning 10 minutes and another 10 minutes at night to prevent the water from evaporating due to the heat.

The lawn needs maintenance to keep it looking nice . Therefore, it is advisable to learn  how to plant and care for the lawn . If you still do not have an irrigation network in the garden, it may be interesting to consult how to install a sprinkler irrigation .

How to eliminate insects from your plants: eight simple tricks

There is nothing worse for our plants than an insect infestation : they are ugly and they can also destroy them. It may seem that the most obvious remedy is to spray the pest with insecticide, but this is impractical, as we would also kill the plant .

Here are eight simple tricks to eliminate insects from plants.

1 - Keep your plants always clean
Get used to keeping your plants clean , you will reduce the chances of them suffering from any type of plague and you will be able to detect them before they are too big. To clean them you can use a feather duster or even a damp cloth if the plants are large.

2 - Sage, basil, chamomile, onions, garlic, vinegar ...
There are a lot of home remedies to kill insect pests, although their effectiveness is relative. Both sage, basil, chamomile, onions, garlic or even vinegar are natural products that help to repel insects . If you choose this method, it is best to take one of these ingredients and put it in hot water. When the mixture has cooled, pour it over the plant to be treated with the help of a sprayer.

3 - Avoid humidity
It is very common that we find mosquitoes hovering around our plant . These insects do not pose a serious threat to our plants, but they are very uncomfortable. Well, when a plant suffers a mosquito infestation, it is probably because we have watered too much.

Keep in mind that mosquitoes are very attracted to humidity. If the plant in question is indoor, change the soil and water it less frequently. If, on the other hand, it is an outdoor plant, the best thing you can do is wait for the soil to dry and check how often you water it.

4 - Killing aphids is easier than it seems
One of the most common insect pests is aphids, small insects that form real colonies on our plants . To end them it will be enough to spray the plant invaded by aphids with a solution that we have previously obtained by mixing water and a little soap.

On the other hand, it is quite common to find ladybugs near aphids. Do n't kill them ! These types of insects are the natural predators of aphids, they will help you to kill them.

5 - Tobacco against caterpillars
Another very common pest is caterpillars. There is a very effective method to kill these pests. Buy yourself a packet of tobacco, bring water to a boil, and pour the tobacco from your cigarettes into it.

  • If you are a smoker, you can also put the butts of your ashtrays in the pot. The resulting mixture is extremely toxic, which is why it is so effective in killing caterpillars. But be careful, you also run the risk of damaging the plant. Use a sprayer to spray the plant and always strain the mixture before pouring it in.

6 - Against wasps
Wasps are usually very close to fruit trees, especially at the end of August and throughout September. They are very nervous animals, so it is very impractical to try to spray them with some kind of liquid. What we can do is set traps for them; By placing jars or jars filled with some sweet liquid, we will be able to divert your attention from the fruit tree.

  • Honey is very useful for this, since given its viscosity, in addition to attracting wasps, it traps them. Wasps, in general, will be very attracted to meat. If you don't mind having meat dishes scattered around your garden, you can also consider this option.

7 - That insects do not climb the plant
There are many insects that reach the plants by climbing: ants, centipedes, spiders ... To combat this type of insects, consider the possibility of putting double-sided adhesive tape across the trunk of your plant. It is a somewhat drastic measure that will only be useful in large plants with a considerable trunk , but it is still very useful to prevent pests of this type of insects.

8 - The nursery will always remain
Go to your nursery. You can find countless products to kill insects

Insecticides to control flying and crawling insect pests at home

The most common insects in homes and gardens have their hours counted with insecticides against mosquitoes, ants, ticks, fleas, bed bugs, cockroaches and more

Mosquitoes, ants, ticks, fleas, bed bugs, cockroaches ... There are many insects that can sneak into your home without you noticing and generate a plague . This not only carries the problem of causing a bad image and generates disgust, but it can also cause illness, lack of hygiene and allergic reactions to bites . Therefore, having a good insecticide at home to use to kill all those bugs as soon as they appear seems essential.

For example, the Protect Home Blattanex for home use and immediate action can come in handy in that situation. It is specially designed for crawling insects and is sold in a 500 ml bottle with an application nozzle and a spray bottle to be more effective and easy to use. For all this, and also taking into account the excellent ratings given by its users, we have chosen it as the best insecticide in this comparison. But, if the pest problem is the plants in your garden or terrace , then the ultra-versatile Compo Axiendo will be better for you.. It is perfect for fighting aphids, worms, beetles, mealybugs and grasshoppers. In short, two very interesting options. But, as you will see below, there are many others worth noting.

The best, our choice: Protect Home Insecticide
The best insecticide of the Protect Home brand according to the opinions of Amazon customers. It has a 4.4 out of 5 average score and 66% of 5-star ratings . It is especially effective, as José Luis says, “for cockroaches and ants inside the home”. However, it quickly removes all types of crawling insects such as bed bugs, spiders, beetles, or fleas. It is sold in spray format and in a 500 ml bottle . According to Esther, “its application cannula makes it very easy to use. In addition, it is very persistent. With a couple of uses I have stopped the plague of ants that I had at home ”.

Second option: Protect Home immediate action anti-cockroach gel
Now we go with the best anti-cockroach gel from the Protect Home brand for Amazon customers. "It is very durable and its action is immediately noticeable", María del Rosario tells us about him. In fact, it offers up to 4 weeks of protection and is valid for any species of this insect. It is sold in syringes with the capacity to control pests in spaces of a maximum of 100 m2 thanks to the fact that it acts as a bait. Jonathan adds, in this sense, that “I apply it under the kitchen furniture once a month. Since I have done it, I have not seen a cockroach at home again ”. It has a 3.8 out of 5 and 50% of maximum scores .

Third option: Protect Home total protection barrier insecticide
Another of the best insecticides of the Protect Home brand according to user comments on Amazon. It has an average score of 3.9 out of 5 and 51% of 5-star reviews . It is, as Cristóbal explains, a "barrier insecticide, that is, it not only kills bugs, but also prevents them from entering the house." How to choose an insecticide and what to consider before buying one?

To find the perfect insecticide offer for you, you must first consider all these purchasing aspects:
  • Mode of application . Liquid insecticides in spray are recommended for occasional use, that is, if you do not have pests at home but from time to time you find a cockroach or a moth, for example. In contrast, gel and powder products are more suitable for ants and many other insects when they already appear in large numbers.
  • Type of insects . There are insecticides for ticks, termites, fleas, bed bugs ... Check the product description to choose the right one for the problem you suffer.
  • Toxicity . The insecticide must remain in the environment for the shortest possible time and not affect food. Still, you will need to maintain some security measures.
  • For interior or exterior : Another important aspect. An insecticide for the garden is not the same as one for the home. Keep that in mind.
  • Price of the insecticide . It depends on the type. The cheapest spray can cost between € 3 and € 10. The most effective against pests and for use in agriculture or farms can be worth up to € 25.
  • Best brands of insecticides . Protect Home, Compo and Massocide have been the best valued manufacturers within this comparison.

What is an insecticide?

Insecticides are chemical compounds of organic or synthetic origin intended to kill insects of all kinds . In fact, there are those specifically designed for cockroaches, mosquitoes, flies or fleas, for example. They are used both in the domestic sphere and in agriculture, livestock or industry. Ideally, they have the following characteristics :

  • Specificity . They only kill specimens of the species for which they are designed, but not the others. This is the reason why there are, for example, insecticides for wasps and insecticides for ants.
  • Low toxicity . Both for humans and for the rest of the fauna. In this sense, the best insecticides do not affect bees in any way because they are pollinating fauna and play a key role in the maintenance of ecosystems. Nor to the species that inhabit fresh water.
  • Effectiveness . The insecticide for home or professional use should be effective with a small application.
  • Latent . It must remain in the environment long enough to combat the pest. However, it cannot be cumulative or persistent. To do this, it has to degrade without generating toxic by-products.
  • Reduced price . Pest control is essential for human health. Therefore, there must be very effective cheap insecticides.

For what do you use it?
Obviously, the best insecticides are aimed at controlling and eliminating insect pests in any indoor or outdoor space . Many of them can cause serious damage to human and animal health. You just have to think about how mosquitoes generate malaria epidemics in many countries of the world or how ticks cause tularemia or Lyme disease in those beings that bite.

But not only that, insects can also cause harmful effects on agricultural crops and deterioration of the hygiene conditions of any space. For example, the usefulness of the insecticides recommended for cockroaches is not only to kill these unpleasant beings for many of us, but also to avoid that, when they come into contact with food, they infect it with Salmonella bacteria (responsible for salmonellosis ), of which they are carriers. Cockroaches are also linked to the transmission of such serious diseases as cholera, leprosy, polio, dysentery and typhoid fever. Therefore, you must be especially careful with them and combat any hint of plague as soon as it is detected.

What do insecticides contain?

It depends . There are several types of insecticides depending on their composition:

  • Organochlorine insecticides . The most common were DDT. They were really effective in fighting flying insects and, with it, in controlling diseases such as malaria or yellow fever. However, due to their organic accumulation, today they are prohibited.
  • Carbamate insecticides . They have become the most common in the home. The best known is icaridin for its low toxicity, its high repellent capacity and its speed of action.
  • Organophosphate insecticides . They are the most used in agriculture. The best example is malathion. It has a powerful shock effect and generates almost no waste.
  • Pyrethroid insecticides . They can be applied directly to the skin and serve as repellants. In addition, they are also ideal garden insecticides to protect plants from pests.
  • IGR insecticides . They are used to kill the larvae of insects before they hatch.

Some insects generate resistance to certain insecticides and therefore there are different compounds For their part, carbamates, organochlorines and organophosphates are organic insecticides since they have carbon in their composition. eye! They should not be confused with organic insecticides , which are those made exclusively from natural ingredients.

What types of insecticides can we get?

  1. First of all, we must distinguish different types of insecticides based on the phase of life in which the insect is found. We can differentiate between: - Ovicides . They kill the eggs deposited by the insect. - Larvicides . They kill the young (larvae) of the insects. - Adulticides . Designed to eliminate adult specimens. That said, it is also possible to differentiate according to the application method: - Liquid insecticide spray . The most common. In fact, it is the best insecticide for flies and mosquitoes, although it can also work for cockroaches and other crawling insects. It is recommended if you do not have a pest problem but, occasionally, a bug enters the house. - Gel insecticide. Ideal for cockroaches. It is sold in syringes by means of which to apply drops in places of passage of these insects or in which it is suspected that they have nested. They are usually delayed-acting. The insect eats it and uses it to feed its congeners, so very little is capable of killing a good number of specimens. - Insecticide mop . It is recommended for ants. It is included in floor cleaning products and must be diluted with water. Gives the surface a repellent coating. - Powder insecticide . It is not usually used in homes, but it is used in farms and country houses. It works in a similar way to gel. - Insecticide in paint . Also useful in places where animals live. It is a type of paint that includes ovicidal, larvicidal and adulticidal substances. It is one of the best insecticides for bed bugs, termites and chicken lice, for example. - Electric insecticide . It is a device that is hung from the wall or ceiling. Its bright blue light attracts flying insects. When they get close, they emit an electric shock that kills them. It is an insecticide for mosquitoes, flies and moths mainly. - Biological or natural insecticide . It is made exclusively from natural plants. In fact, it does not normally kill insects, but repels them. It is generally made from extracts of basil, lemon balm and, above all, citronella. - Insecticidal oil . It is what we usually call skin mosquito repellent. It is applied to the skin and prevents itching for a specific number of hours. It is usually an insecticide with a pleasant aroma.

What are the effects of insecticides?
It does not matter if we are talking about insecticides for spiders, for bed bugs or for any other insect. The functioning system of these products is based on the inhibition of vital enzymes of these beings, which results in an immediate collapse of their motor activity and death.

Generally, these inhibitory substances reach the insect's body in one or more of the following ways:

  • By ingestion . This is the case, for example, of any systemic insecticide or the classic anti-cockroach gel. The product acts as bait, the insect eats it and dies quickly. In species that devour dead congeners, they are very effective.
  • By inhalation . They enter the insect through its windpipes or cuticles, which are the entry routes of its respiratory system. It is especially effective against flying insects.
  • By contact . It is the most versatile way. The insecticide penetrates through the insect's cuticle to reach its nervous system and inhibit it.

Advantages and disadvantages

  • Buying insecticides for fleas, ticks or any other insect has unquestionable advantages : - They degrade rapidly in the environment and do not generate toxicity for humans. - They do not leave residues in food. - Insects do not usually develop resistance to them. - They act almost immediately. - They can be used at any time. Quick action, ease of use and effectiveness are essential characteristics to control insect pests at home However, they also have some drawbacks : - They are usually flammable. - They can cause toxicity in pets. - They require constant application. - They require taking precautions with children.
  • Precautions and recommendations when using insecticides
  • For the use of the insecticide to be safe, you must follow the following tips : - Read the application instructions specified on the bottle and follow them strictly. - Apply only the amount of insecticide necessary. - Never store the insecticide canister near an ignition source (a gas boiler or a stove burner, for example). Also, do not put it in direct contact with sunlight. - Keep the insecticide out of the reach of children. - Do not apply the insecticide near your face or that of someone close. May cause eye, skin, nasal and oral irritation. - In case of accidental ingestion, immediately call the Emergency telephone number (112). - Wash your hands thoroughly after using the insecticide and, above all, before handling food. - Do not use insecticides in powder or gel if there are pets in the house that can ingest them.

Can you make a homemade insecticide? How?

  • Yes it is . You can make a natural insecticide from products you have in your pantry. The best known is garlic , which is especially useful as a repellent and to combat pests in garden or terrace plants. To make it, you will need : - A head of garlic with at least 6 cloves. - Half a liter of white vinegar. - Half a liter of water. - A little pH neutral soap. - A spray bottle. Then follow these directions to prepare it:
  • Peel the garlic and crush them. This is the fundamental ingredient due to its repellent and insecticidal character.

Put the white vinegar and garlic in a pot.
