How to mow the lawn on slope

Many homeowners view lawn mowing as an unpleasant task, while others see it as an opportunity to beautify their property. When done properly, this activity helps keep your lawn green and healthy. Plus, it reduces weeds and bare areas. With a little practice, you can even form interesting patterns when mowing your lawn.

Part 1 Preparing the mower and lawn

1
Use a lawnmower suitable for your type of lawn. Gasoline powered walk-behind mowers tend to be the most common choice for typical suburban garden lawns, but you actually have several options:
  • Manual reel mowers activate only when you push them. In addition, they are an affordable and ecological option for very small and flat gardens.
  • Electric walk-behind mowers are quieter and easier to operate than gasoline models, but they are also heavier and more expensive. In particular, corded models are best suited for small gardens, 1000 square meters (0.25 acres) or less.
  • Gasoline mowers come in both manual and self-propelled varieties. Either is considered suitable for fields up to approximately 2000 square meters (0.5 acres).
  • Mower tractors cost more than manual models, but save significantly more time when mowing fields larger than 2,000 square meters (0.5 acres). However, it is not safe to use them on slopes that are too steep.

2
Keep the mower blades sharp and free of debris. Dull blades produce uneven cuts in grass blades, leading to brown tips and disease. If your grass looks uneven after cutting, it's probably time to sharpen the blades. [1]
  • You may need to sharpen them 1-2 times a year.
  • You can extract and sharpen the blades on your own with a few tools and a little mechanical knowledge, or you can type “lawnmower sharpeners near my area” into a search engine to find professionals in your area.
  • Even if the blades don't seem to need sharpening, you should check them for damage every 3-4 cuts and brush or rinse off any accumulated grass debris from the blades and on the underside of the mower.

3
Set the cutting height according to the type of grass and the weather. Many people tend to mow their lawn too much in an effort to reduce the frequency of mowing. However, this procedure causes the gardens to turn brown and leads to the growth of weeds. Ideal cutting heights vary based on a number of factors, but are typically 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm). [2]
  • You should measure from the ground to the bottom of the mower deck and then from this point to the blades. This total equals the cutting height.
  • You can find specific cutting guides for your grass type (for example, at the following link: https://www.lowes.com/projects/lawn-and-garden/mow-your-lawn-correctly/project ).
  • You can also contact your local agricultural extension program for advice.

4
Check the fuel and oil levels before starting the mower. It is not safe to add fuel to a hot mower engine, so fill the fuel tank before starting to mow. Also check the oil level every 2 to 3 cuts and add oil as needed before starting the engine. [3]
  • You should also change the oil from time to time and clean the fuel lines, or have a professional perform this routine maintenance for you. Consider adjusting your mower once a year in early spring.

5
Mow your lawn in good time, not yours. Some people mow like clockwork every Saturday afternoon, but it's best to mow based on your height. Use the "rule of one third" and avoid cutting more than one third of the total height of the grass at each cut. [4]
  • Therefore, if you keep the height of your grass at 2 inches (5.1 cm), you should wait until it is 3 inches (8 cm) tall before mowing it.
  • You should also check the weather forecast for dry weather days. Wet grass can clog the mower. Also, it makes the garden compact and too slippery to be mowed safely.
  • It is best to mow at night after a dry day. In this way, accumulation, damage and heat stress are reduced. Therefore, you should plan your cuts accordingly. [5]

6
Clear grass debris and remove pets and children before mowing. You should walk around the lawn and pick up branches, rocks, toys, pet waste, or other obstructions that could damage the mower or make a mess. Even more important, you should send pets and children indoors, or at least to a safe area away from where you will be working. [6]
  • Some lawnmowers can shoot rocks or other debris at dangerous speeds, so it's always best to keep other people and pets out of that area.

7
Wear safety glasses, hearing protectors and suitable clothing. You should wear safety glasses to protect yourself from flying debris and hearing protectors to silence the mower engine. You should also wear sturdy closed shoes and long pants to protect your feet and legs. [7]
  • Apply sunscreen and wear a hat, even on cloudy days or if it's early or late in the day.

Make sure you stay hydrated.
You can take breaks if you go to work in a large garden, feel agitated, or start feeling drained.

Part 2 Mowing the lawn efficiently

1
Mow around the perimeter and over any obstacles first. Unless you have a square or rectangular garden, your initial goal should be to create a square cut area. You should work your way around trees or along curved beds, and then create straight lines and angles in those areas. You can turn the remaining grass into one or more rectangles for easier cutting. [8]
  • You can cut around the perimeter first to square your lawn and give yourself room to turn the mower as you go in rows.
  • You may want to go around the perimeter twice to create an even larger turning area.

2
Cut back and forth over sloped areas. You must account for any sloping areas when creating rectangular cut areas. You should never cut a slope that is too light. Instead, you should proceed in a straight line perpendicular to the slope. [9]
  • If you have trouble going up or down the slope on wet grass, avoid mowing it up or down, even if the grass is dry.
  • Manual reel mowers are less dangerous than larger, heavier powered models on slopes. However, you could still be injured if you slip and fall.
  • Instead of using a lawnmower on a slope, try using a brush cutter or consider planting or placing something other than grass in that area.

3
Mow the lawn from back to front in straight lines forming a slight overlap. For each rectangular area you have created, you should start at one side and work your way from one end to the other. Then turn the mower over and cut an adjacent row in the opposite direction. Continue this procedure until you have cut the entire section. [10]
  • The amount of overlap required will depend on the configuration of your mower. However, you should generally place the wheels (on one side) just above the cut line you created with the previous row.
  • Front-to-back turns will be easier if you use a zero turn mower. If not, you should turn on the rear wheel closest to the next row and readjust as necessary to get into position.

4
Discard the clippings in the previously cut row. The fine clippings help nourish your lawn, so you can leave them scattered throughout your yard when possible. If you have a side discharge mower, you should point the clippings towards the row you just cut. A mulch mower is used to cut and disperse the grass blades. [eleven]
  • However, you should avoid leaving clumps of clipped grass on your lawn, as this is more likely to happen if you have a dull blade or the lawn is wet. You can place the clippings in a bag or use a rake to spread the accumulations.
  • If you want to reduce thatch from your lawn, you can use a bag and attach it to the mower to collect clippings. You can place the clippings in a compost pile, use it as mulch, or throw it away in the trash or a compost collection system.

5
Change the direction of the rows by cutting regularly. For example, you shouldn't mow square grass on the same north and south lines every time. If you do this, the grass will start to lean permanently in the direction of the row and will show the marks of the mower wheels. [12]
  • Instead, consider switching between the north and south to east and west lines with each subsequent cutting session.

6
Use a brush cutter or brush cutter after you finish mowing the lawn. These tools are not that fast or efficient, so it is best to use the mower to cover as much grass as possible. You can then use other tools to take care of the remaining grass that the mower couldn't reach. [13]
  • However, some people prefer to cut the edges first, as it is easier to spread out the heavy clippings this way. This is a viable option, but you will spend more time than necessary cutting the edges. Also, these methods tend to be more damaging to the lawn than the mower (for example, it is easier to cut the grass too much at certain points).

Part 3 Create stripes on the lawn

1
Form simple rows back and forth to create basic grass strips. The lightest and darkest stripes that you can see on the well-groomed lawn of a professional sports field are created simply by bending the grass in the direction you are cutting it. Grass that bends away from you is lighter, while grass that is bent toward you is darker. [14]
  • So a traditional back-and-forth cutting method will create straight lines that alternate between lighter and darker shades (depending on your viewing angle).
  • To enhance the fringe effect when folding your lawn more completely, you should get a garden roller and use it to repeat the pattern you just cut.

2
Create chessboard-like stripes by cutting the grass in perpendicular rows. To create a checkerboard style that alternates light and dark squares, you simply mow the same area twice.
  • First, you need to cut it with standard lines back and forth (for example, north to south). Then cut the same area on the east and west lines from one side to the other. Once you are done, you should observe the characteristic pattern of a chessboard. [fifteen]
  • You should finish the job by going around the perimeter once more at the bottom to eliminate any irregularities caused by the mower's turns.

3
Use an interesting diamond or zigzag pattern. A diamond-shaped pattern is actually not much more difficult than a checkerboard. You simply need to rotate the alternate cutting lines 45 degrees, so that you can essentially cut from one corner to the other within the square cutting area. [16]
  • To make a zigzag pattern, you must first create a diamond pattern. Then you should do a repeating series of alternating 90 degree turns each time you cut more than 3 diamonds (either in series of light-dark-light or dark-light-dark in the shadow). This pattern takes practice, and it may be easier for you to create a diagram beforehand to use as a guide.

Warnings

  • To make getting started easier and safer, you should start the mower on a sidewalk, driveway, or other solid surface.
  • You should keep pets and children away from the area where you are going to work and the mower you are going to operate.
  • You must choose your hearing protectors carefully. Although the goal is to protect yourself from the noise of a gasoline engine, you should not isolate yourself too much from the sound so as not to be aware of what is happening around you. Ideally, use a quality pair of earplugs that offer protection while allowing warning sounds to enter (for example, a car horn or a person yelling).
  • Power mowers are dangerous equipment. If operated improperly, they can cause serious injury and even death.
  • Check the manufacturer's instructions. You should inform yourself about the power, functions and limitations of the mower. In addition, you must know the safety devices, their operation and how they should be maintained. Try to understand the difference between a safe operation and a potentially dangerous one.
  • You must be especially careful when pulling the mower in your direction so that you don't trip or fall. Instead of pulling the mower towards your body, consider standing on the opposite side of the discharge. Then walk forward while pulling the mower from the side.
  • When mowing the lawn, you should always wear hearing and eye protectors, as well as sturdy shoes. Professional lawn care experts wear long work pants and lightweight, long-sleeved shirts to protect themselves from electrical equipment, debris, sun exposure, and insects.
  • If the blade becomes clogged with clippings or other debris, avoid using your hands to clear it. Instead, you should turn off the gasoline mower and spray water on the blade with a garden hose to clear it. Even if the mower is off, the blade can start turning once you clear the obstruction. This is due to the torque built up in the motor.
  • You should wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying debris. Versions that have wraparound strips are ideal. Although modern mowers are designed to keep this problem to a minimum, there is always the possibility of an incident occurring.
  • It is a bad decision to use a portable device to listen to music (for example, an iPod) while mowing the lawn. While headphones can block sound, listening to music provides a dangerous mental distraction at a time when full concentration is required to properly control this dangerous machinery.

Things you will need
  • hearing and eye protectors

How to Mow Slopes Safely

A typical lawn mowing day can turn deadly with a wrong turn

The accident:A 43-year-old temp worker is part of a crew that maintains a rest area on an interstate highway. The worker begins to cut the grass along the hillside that borders one of the parking lots of the rest area. There is a 15 foot high slope with a 35 degree incline to one side of the parking lot. The crew chief instructs the worker to cut the grass on the slope crosswise and only halfway due to the steepness of the slope. The worker is instructed to use an edger to finish cutting the grass at the top of the hillside. Another crew member is outside helping clean up and informs the worker that he is going inside to take a break. The crew member returns 30 minutes later and finds the lawn mower upside down, with the worker crushed underneath it. Call the rest of the crew to help lift the machine and call the Emergency Medical service. The worker dies from massive trauma to the head and chest.

Bottom Line : Workers should not mow on slopes hotter than 15 degrees. The cutting machine should be operated on the slopes in a cross way and never from the top down Additionally, the worker should not have been left alone when cutting the grass on a steep ramp.

Tips for cutting grass on slopes:

  • Make sure ride-on mowers are equipped with a roll over protection system (ROPS).
  • Always wear a seat belt.
  • Do not operate mowers on inclines that exceed the limit angles specified by the manufacturer.
  • If you do not have the instructions available to you, evaluate the terrain and slope conditions to make sure the mower is operated safely.
  • Avoid mowing on slopes at a 15 degree angle.
  • Use a slope indicator, also called a "clinometer" or "inclinometer"
  • Do not leave workers unsupervised in potentially dangerous conditions.

How to mow the lawn on a slope

Once you have a lawn mower and the grass in your garden does not stop growing, it's time to get down to work.

Wait, don't you have your own machine yet !? Don't you know which one is the right one? In maquinacortacesped.com we have a step-by-step guide to help you make the decision without margin of error and to make sure you can see the analysis of the different types:

Now yes, there is no excuse for not having the essential tool and we are going to explain step by step how to cut the lawn, from the most basic to the most advanced.

How to mow the lawn

If you still do not control when you have to read our article.

Once the right moment is clarified, what you have to know is how the lawn should be cut so that it looks good and you can enjoy it as soon as possible without making the typical mistakes.

If, like mortals, you do not have the budget for a lawn mowing service or if you enjoy taking care of what has cost you so much to achieve, we are going to teach you all the secrets so that you finally have the garden of your dreams.

The first thing to be clear about is that organization is key to not turning a relatively simple task into hours of insufferable work. To do this, check the following before starting:

  • Remove the obstacles that may impede your freedom of movement, especially the typical pots that are placed on the edges of the lawn. If you do it at the beginning you will not have to be constantly stopping and starting the machine.
  • Collect all the material that you are going to use:
  • Your cutting machine: check that it is ready (blades, gasoline, oil, battery ...)
  • Protection material: glasses, gloves, footwear, mask ...
  • Bag for waste. We recommend that you make use of a garden container that will prevent the bag from closing when filling it.
  • Decide how high you want to leave the grass and what cutting technique is best for you, so you don't have to improvise and ruin the aesthetic stripes.
  • Evaluate if you are interested in taking advantage of other lawn maintenance tasks such as replanting an area, fertilizing, or scarifying.

General Rules for Mowing Lawn

The most basic thing is that to cut the grass you have to make parallel paths passing with the machine on the grass. It's that easy, you start in one corner and end in the opposite.

Now, if your terrain is an irregular surface, it is best to divide it into sectors and cut one by one.

If you have slopes , it is recommended that the lines be perpendicular, that is, do not go uphill-downhill, but from one side to the other at the same level of inclination. You will appreciate it especially if your machine has a motor and manual traction because you will not have to push all its weight up.

On the other hand, you should avoid mowing wet grass . Two reasons: the grass will be more caked, which makes it difficult to cut and damages its quality, and the mechanisms of the tool you are using can also get stuck, especially if it is a manual lawnmower. That is why we advise you to cut the grass before watering.

We know, it is true that sometimes the grass cannot be cut dry simply because the environment moistens it. In these cases, as we have said above, try to remove as much water as possible with a garden broom, but be very careful not to damage the grass.

Another difficulty you may encounter is that the grass has grown a lot, it has happened to all of us. But then the question is, how do you cut the grass when it is very high ? To do it well, it is best to first pass a lawn rake trying to align the stems and remove small branches and stones that make it difficult for the blades to work.

Select the maximum cutting height and lower it with different passes until you reach the desired level. If you try to cut long lengths from the first moment, it is possible that the machine will jam or that there will be uncut areas.

That is not all but it is enough to get out of the way and leave the grass short. If what you want to have is a spectacular green carpet, you must know the cutting techniques that most do not apply due to ignorance but that turn your effort into a professional cut. In the next few lines we will tell you how to do it in an easy way to enjoy its results.

Special features of each Tool

You already know the bases to leave your lawn short, regular and uniform. Now, depending on the tool you use, the procedure can vary.

How to cut the lawn with a machine?

Whether manual or motorized, using a lawn mower will be necessary in almost all cases.

The mower without a motor has no mystery, you have to pass its cutting cylinder through every meter of grass. We recommend incorporating (if you do not have it) a basket that collects the grass chips that are leaving, since if you are not going to mulch you will have to sweep them later.

If you are going to use a corded electric lawnmower, the most important thing is that you make sure it is long enough, you can guarantee it with an extension cord . The only difficulty you can find is that the cable unravels while you use it.

To avoid this, place it on the floor free of obstacles so that it can be unrolled as you pull. Of course, cut away more and more from the plug and not the other way around because that way you will avoid stepping on the cable meters when you return.

It would be different if you were to use a battery powered mower . Then the only thing you have to worry about is that it is sufficiently charged to last the whole day.

In both cases, starting is really simple, consisting of pressing a button that, depending on the model, will have to be combined with operating a lever for more safety.

If your tool is addicted to gasoline it is no longer so simple. The greater power has to have something against it and that is that it requires a little more preparation.

Check that you have full oil and gasoline tanks according to the instructions for use. You may need to prime the engine to start it, this is usually a rubber button that is pressed multiple times. Then yes, you give a tug on the starter strap while operating, if necessary, the safety crank and voila! Ready to mow.

Regardless of how your machine's engine is powered, take extra care when making U-turns while mowing the lawn. These machines usually weigh a minimum of about 10 kg so if you turn them the wrong way you can tear up grass and dirt.

To do it well, lift the rear wheels and turn a little, then with the front wheels and so on until you get the desired position. It is slower without a doubt, but destroying your garden to gain a few seconds is not profitable.

How to cut the lawn with a tractor?

If you are lucky enough to have a very large garden and you envy those perfectly arranged sports stadiums by wondering how they will cut the grass of a football field, we have the answer: lawn mowing tractors.

It does not necessarily have to be yellow, you can choose the color you like, yes, the type of tractor is the right one. These machines run on gasoline and require a lot of space to maneuver.

In addition, if you want to get that professional cut and attention to detail, you will have to use a built-in roller to leave those spectacular stripes, as we tell you in the second part.

The operation is similar to a vehicle: key to start, accelerator and brake, and you turn with the steering wheel. Like driving a car, it is fun and precisely for that reason, maximum caution.

How to cut the lawn without a machine?

This question may seem surprising but the truth is that many people find that none of the mower options are perfectly suited to their needs and then they choose not to make that financial outlay. We present the alternatives that you can take advantage of, to cut the lawn without a lawnmower.

Cutting the grass with a brush cutter is, in these cases, the best option. Keep in mind that the land must be small if not, choose a machine with more capacity. The trimmers work with a motor that can be electric or gasoline, in addition, depending on the width of the cut, the type of blades and the resistance of its materials, various prices are offered.

Although they are a familiar tool, many people do not know how to cut grass with an edger. You will have to hold it with the strength of your arms, so we recommend that your model have handles for both hands.

The truth is that they are incredibly useful as a complement to a traditional machine because they allow you to reach difficult areas such as that grass that grows between the stones of a path, or the limits of the lawn with the house.

Ok it's true, the brush cutter is a machine too… If what you are looking for is something even simpler, even rudimentary, you still have other possibilities such as cutting the lawn with scissors , with a machete or with a flock of sheep.

Seriously, be very careful if you try to use a machete or similar (there are people who do), but in the case of scissors it can certainly work. Logically you will not be able to cut 100 meters with scissors, but they can be a good substitute for the brush cutter to outline those areas where you cannot reach with your main machine.

How to heat a house with propane gas efficiently

It is delivered to homes and stored in a special tank, it is more profitable to buy propane in the summer months, when prices per gallon drop. The heating with propane reduces emissions of greenhouse gases and can help save on energy costs in general. No special ovens are required for propane heating. A simple and inexpensive adaptation in the gas line or in the home oven is enough to start using it. Next, we will tell you how to go about placing the propane system in your home.

Oven and ventilation

A propane furnace set up as part of a central or zone heating system efficiently heats the home during the winter months. Configured with a fan or blower through a distribution ventilation system, the furnace provides heated air throughout the house.

Gas ovens have a useful life of between 15 and 20 years. Advanced ventilation systems equipped with damper controlled switch vents add to the efficiency of the propane heating system by shutting down when heat reaches demand levels.

Advantages of propane gas

Propane gas is a good choice for home heating because it has several advantages for home heating, hot water, and cooking.

  • It is supplied by a specialized company either in bulk or piped.
  • Propane gas has a high calorific value.
  • The propane gas system is controlled by reliable systems.
  • Substances derived from sulfur are added to its composition in order to be able to smell the smell in the event of a gas leak, since it is an odorless and colorless gas and otherwise it would not be felt.
  • It is not a toxic gas, it has a clean combustion.

Radiant heating system

Used in conjunction with a water boiler that is heated with a propane heater, radiant systems then pump the hot water through pipes embedded in the ground. Radiant heat can be more efficient than using a central heating system and ducts. The reason is that heat radiates from the floor and rises naturally throughout the room. Insulate the boiler or water heater with an insulating blanket using efficient propane.

Lighters and thermostats

To efficiently heat a home with propane and save on energy costs, replace all pilot lights on furnaces and water heaters with electronic igniters . Electronic igniters operate on demand, avoiding the waste of propane gas spent in a continuously operating pilot light.

To help with the heating efficiency of your propane heating system, install a programmable thermostat that allows you to program the thermostat for colder temperatures when sleeping or away from home.

Insulation and Sealing

To keep propane heating costs down and use it efficiently, check that your attic and home has enough insulation. To check insulation levels, use the formula for the measurement provided by the US Department of Energy. The formula varies depending on the type of insulation. Seal all potential air leaks around doors and windows. Add a vapor diffuser barrier during new construction, or install one under the house in the basement after adding insulation to the floor. All of these measures help improve the efficiency of using propane gas for heat.

Differences between Butane and Propane LPG: prices, formats and uses

Butane or propane? What gas is better? We help you decide which Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to buy according to your needs. Also, you must take into account the differences between each one of them, such as, for example, the calorific value, the freezing temperature or the form of distribution, to determine which gas is best for you according to the climate where you live and the use that you go to. to give.

Butane vs propane gas

What is propane and butane gas?

Butane and propane are called Liquefied Petroleum Gases (LPG) because they are extracted in the same oil refining process. In this process, they are converted into high-energy fuels to heat homes.

What is the chemical composition of butane and propane gas?

As butane gas and propane are supplies that come from the same energy source, their chemical composition is very similar:: C4H10 (propane) and C3H8 (butane).

What are the characteristics of butane and propane gas?

The physical properties of propane gas exceed in some respects those of butane gas, and even those of other energies such as diesel or natural gas. For example, its resistance to cold is much greater and, also, its ability to heat larger spaces.

In addition, it is important to note that commercial propane and butane are not pure gases, since they are sold as a mixture of the same. That is, commercial propane is 80% propane and 20% butane, and vice versa.

What are the Similarities Between Butane Gas and Propane Gas

Both LPG have common characteristics and, therefore, it is so difficult to decide between buying butane or propane .

Similarities: Propane vs Butane

  • LPG : Liquefied Petroleum Gases obtained from oil refining or gas wells
  • Mixture : They are not pure gases to be sold as a mixture of hydrocarbons
  • Weight : Sold by weight (€ / kg)
  • From gas → to Liquid : Gases compressed at high pressure until they reach their liquid state
  • Properties : Colorless and Odorless
  • Non-toxic : Maximum guarantee of safety * Do not use LPG in rooms without ventilation or very closed
  • Small bottle : For reduced consumption: 11 kg Propane // 6 or 12 kg Butane
  • High energy efficiency : The highest calorific powers in a controlled way
  • Clean combustion : does not produce smoke or soot
  • Versatility : easy transport, storage and maintenance

Differences between butane and propane

To know how to choose between propane or butane gas , you should know their energy differences, which adapt to different circumstances and needs:

Propane or butane according to your consumption (choice of format)

The energy consumption that you intend to carry out will be the determining factor in deciding whether you will need it for a specific event, or it will be for a long period of time.

Your consumption is the key factor in deciding the format of butane or propane gas
Butane : Occasionally and little annual consumption. Propane : Frequently and with medium-high annual consumption.

For this reason, there are propane tanks for high consumption and greater storage capacity (1,000 - 100,000 kg). Also, there are the 35 kg propane cylinders for average consumption. And finally, propane or butane cylinders (less than 15 kg) for low consumption.

Formats of propane and butane gas
  • Format    Propane    Butane
  • Bulk warehouse    1,029 - 100,296 kg
  • Bottle    11 kg    6 kg
  • 35 kg    12.5 kg
  • Channeled deposit    2,079 - 100,296 kg

Propane or butane depending on weather and freezing temperature (choice of gas)
The freezing temperature of butane gas is lower than that of propane. For this reason, butane is suitable for temperate climates, while propane is specifically suitable for cold areas, since it freezes at -44ºC.

Cold weather
Areas with temperatures below -0ºC in winter or for longer.
  • Propane : the most suitable LPG for those homes that are located in colder areas, since its freezing temperature is at -44 ºC (degrees centigrade).
  • Recommendation: If you have little consumption, contract the supply of piped propane.
  • Butane : It freezes at -0 ºC, therefore, you may run out of butane due to a gasification problem in the cylinder.
  • Recommendation: store the cylinders inside the house.

Mild weather

Areas with temperatures above 0ºC normally throughout the year.
  • Propane : It works for temperate climates as well.
  • Recommendation: If you have low consumption, buy the most economical LPG cylinders. If you have medium or high consumption, contract the supply of tanks in bulk or channeled.
  • Butane : Good gassing than propane because more energy is generated per unit volume.

In conclusion, if you live in an area where winter is very cold, buy propane gas. On the other hand, if you live in a temperate climate and plan to consume little gas, it is best to buy butane gas, since the 12.5 kg bottle is cheaper.

What is the difference between a butane cylinder and a propane cylinder?
The traditional butane or propane gas bottle gives high performance and safety to users with low energy consumption or sporadic use, for example, in a vacation home or in a motorhome.

In addition, it is important to note that the butane gas cylinder is the most widely used at the domestic level because it is a supply that adjusts very well to daily tasks such as cooking, bathing or heating the house.

But why buy the butane cylinder instead of the propane one? The main reason lies in the price, however, if the climate in your area is very cold you should buy the propane cylinder.

Thus, LPG cylinders differ in two aspects, the price and the freezing temperature:

  • Butane cylinder : cheaper but freezes in cold climates
  • Propane cylinder : more expensive but does NOT freeze in cold climates and resists down to -44ºC.

If you can use propane instead of butane because there is not much difference
You can continue using the same installation (inside) of gas for either of the two energies. If your installation is outdoors, you should anticipate that butane can freeze at temperatures below 0ºC and propane resists very cold temperatures (-44ºC).

Therefore, we advise you to buy one cylinder or another depending on the temperature to which you are going to expose the cylinder, bearing in mind that the installation through which the gas will pass may be inside or outside the home.

  • If you live in a temperate climate : the 12.5 kg butane cylinder will be more profitable than its counterpart, the 11 kg propane cylinder.
  • If you live in a very cold climate (-0ºC) : the 11 or 35 kg propane bottle will be your best option, even though the price of propane bottles is a little higher than that of butane.
  • In addition, another difference is the amount of gas included in the LPG packaging format, as can be seen in the following table:

Do I have to change the regulator to go from butane to propane bottle?

You must change the regulator of the butane installation if you go to a propane cylinder, since this has a higher pressure, and that may condition the need to alter the regulator head.

Therefore, as each cylinder works at a different pressure, you must change the regulator for the safety of the entire room. To change a butane cylinder to a propane one you must follow the following steps:

How to change a butane cylinder to a propane one?

Steps to follow for your safety:
  • Call a technician to check the proper functioning of the entire installation.
  • Check that your installation and butane cylinder works at 30 mbar.
  • Check that the hobs, stoves and boilers withstand a pressure of 50 mbar.
  • Check the label on the propane cylinder to make sure it works at 50 mbar.
  • Buy a regulator for the 50mbar propane bottle and install it on the nozzle
  • If it is to be used in a recreational vehicle or caravan, buy a pressure reducer so that the pressure drops to 30 mbar (mandatory maximum pressure).
  • Check that the tires of the installation are in good condition and change them if they are expired.
  • Disconnect the hose coupling to the butane bottle and connect it to the new propane bottle.
  • Check the operation of the gas transmission in an appliance connected to the installation. If it doesn't work, call a technician for safety reasons.
  • Mbar (millibar) is the unit of pressure equivalent to one thousandth of a bar. 1 mbar = 0.001 bar // 1 bar = 1,000 mbar

The 30mbar pressure regulator is the most common of all domestic butane gas installations, so call a technician if you are not sure that your installation can withstand higher pressures.

The butane gas regulations indicate that you must make sure that the gas regulator of your installation is compatible with any other gas you have, such as propane LPG.

Thus, in order to use propane instead of butane, it is necessary to follow basic safety rules for its replacement, especially if environmental conditions have changed, for example, if you are going to take the cylinder outside.

You must change the regulating head if the cylinder will be at a temperature of -0ºC
The butane bottle has a regulator set up for warmer temperatures and switching to a propane bottle or colder weather can cause your membrane to rupture. Therefore, you should call a technician and buy a regulator head for the propane bottle, which has a safety thread on top as a tap, to make sure that no leaks will occur.

Butane or propane for the heater

Propane gas or butane gas for
Is a propane gas or butane gas heater better? Depending on the space of the residence, the climate where the home or business is located, and above all, the consumption that you make will be more convenient for one installation or another.

If you have low energy consumption and small spaces, we recommend using other appliances to heat your home such as the catalytic propane or butane stove or the propane gas or butane gas heat gun .

On the contrary, if you have a medium-high consumption and do not have access to natural gas, it is best to install the boiler or radiator system suitable for Liquefied Petroleum Gases, butane and propane.

Next, we provide you with the factors to take into account for LPG heaters, for heating or domestic hot water with both energies.

Advantages and disadvantages of LPG heaters

Propane gas heater

  • / Warmer large spaces : due to its higher calorific value, it is capable of heating very large areas of a large home.
  • / Heaters adaptable to natural gas : If you want to change to natural gas, you will not have to change the boiler suitable for other liquefied gases.
  • / Automatic ignition : it turns on automatically when you open the water or radiator tap.
  • X 1 tap at a time : If you want to use more than 2 water points with the same heater, you will have to buy a more expensive heater (€ 400 approx) and adapted to various energies.
  • / Capacity from 11 to 14 liters : heats up to 14 liters of water in a single use.
  • X It occupies space in your home : You must take into account the place that the heater itself will occupy inside the house as well as the space necessary for its correct maintenance and the hole that must be made if it is a "watertight" model.
  • / Perfect for rural areas : Having a propane tank in a home away from urban centers allows greater autonomy for a longer time.

Butane gas heater

  • / Medium hot spaces : Butane has a good calorific value (although less than propane) and therefore it is capable of heating medium-large spaces quite easily.
  • / Heaters adaptable to natural gas and propane gas : If you want to change to natural gas or propane gas, you will not have to change the boiler suitable for other liquefied gases.
  • / Automatic, hydrogeneration or manual ignition : All ignition alternatives.
  • 2 taps at the same time : You can find boiler models suitable for the use of 2 water points simultaneously for a little more money.
  • X It occupies space in your home : You must take into account the place that the heater itself will occupy inside the house as well as the space necessary for its correct maintenance and the hole that must be made if it is a "watertight" model.
  • X Dependence on gas stations in rural areas : If you live far from the city or a gas station that sells LPG, you will depend on the continuous purchase of butane bottles to maintain your energy consumption.
  • / Propane or butane gas heaters with a modulation system offer 20% energy savings , since they can modulate the power of the flame through the gas flow and avoid consuming more energy.

In conclusion, we recommend using propane gas for its calorific value and, therefore, buying a propane gas heater or boiler. Even, if you have the possibility, you can buy one suitable for other types of gases, in case at any time you want to change to any other alternative energy to natural gas .

However, if you have little consumption and will use energy in a temperate climate, we recommend you buy the butane cylinder because it is cheaper than propane.

Butane or propane for barbecues

Propane gas or butane gas for gas barbecues
The choice of one LPG gas or another will largely depend on the adaptability of the barbecue and its connection to the gas supply outlet.

In general, it can be said that butane cylinders are the best option for barbecues because most of the facilities are adapted to the pressure at which butane gasifies (30 mbar) but, you must bear in mind that butane is only used for hot climates that do not drop below 0ºC ..

Therefore, you should buy LPG packaged in propane or butane bottles depending on the ambient temperature and the possibility of adapting the regulator of the propane bottle to the pressure with which the barbecue works.

However, if you want to make frequent use of the barbecue and it is suitable for propane gas, we recommend opting for the supply of propane in bulk, since you will have greater storage capacity and performance.

The barbecue must be suitable for some LPG

Check the manual for the section in question or call your supplier to verify that your barbecue model and the gas installations connected to them are compatible with any of the Liquefied Petroleum Gases.

In addition to the adaptability and the environment, you should know that both propane and butane are suitable for cooking on barbecues, indoors or outdoors, because it does not provide any additional flavor and is very safe.

Formula for calculating propane consumption in boilers and stoves

How much does propane gas heating consume? What about the water boiler or the kitchen? We help you calculate the propane gas consumption of your home with practical examples.

How to calculate the consumption of propane gas?

The consumption of propane gas is measured based on the thermal systems of your home or business: heating and / or air conditioning, domestic hot water boilers (DHW) and the kitchen; being heating, the system most used by the Spanish.

So, if you are thinking of installing propane gas in your home , you should first check which format is best for you , whether a tank or bottles, estimating your monthly consumption and taking into account the available space.

Similarly, to perform the calculations, you must know the formula for propane gas consumption . This is understood as the amount of gas burned during a certain period; usually expressed in kg / day (kilogram / day).

Consumption = kg × day

Therefore, to calculate the consumption of propane gas in kg / day, you will need to obtain the following values:

Consumption = (P ÷ PCS) * × T

P: Appliance power in kW (kilowatts)

PCS: Higher Calorific Power = 13.97 kWh / kg

T: Daily operating time of the appliance in h / day

* P ÷ PCS = Q

Q: Amount of gas or flow rate that is burned in kg / h

Where do I find the values of the consumption formula?

  • (P) Power : check the label or manual of your boiler, stove, heater, air conditioner or all your consumer appliances that use propane gas.
  • If you find the power in another unit as W (watts), you must convert it to kW (kilowatts) → 1,000 W = 1 kW.
  • It will not be necessary to check the power of appliances that only expel heat, such as radiators.
  • (PCS) Calorific value : it is an approximate value but it may vary depending on the area. Check your bill or the following article on calorific value .
  • (T) Usage time : for a whole day, write down how many hours your devices are in use.
  • → We recommend : choosing a winter day in which the appliances are switched on for a long time, such as a Saturday or Sunday.

Calculation of mixed consumption: Heating + DHW + Kitchen

Pablo, María and their daughter Lucía live in a house in northern Spain, and they want to know how many kg of propane their mixed system consumes (heating, domestic hot water and cooking) on a normal winter day.

Therefore, the first thing they did was to look for the power of the appliances that burn propane gas, in this case, their fire stove and the mixed boiler (for hot water and heating).

Then, on a Saturday in January, they wrote down the hours their devices were on . And, once they had all the data, they continued to perform the following operation:

Consumption = (P ÷ PCS) × T

Systems    P (power)    PCS (calorific value)    T (time)    Daily total
Heating    28.5 kW    13.97 kWh / kg
(common for all)    6 hours / day    12.24 kg / day
Sanitary Hot Water    28.5 kW    2.5 hours / day    5.1 kg / day
Kitchen    6 kW    1 hour / day    0.42 kg / day

 P ÷ PCS = Q

Q (cal) = 28.5 kW ÷ 13.97 kWh / kg = 2.04 kg / h *
Q (hot water) = 28.5 kW ÷ 13.97 kWh / kg = 2.04 kg / h *
Q (coc) = 6 kW ÷ 13.97 kWh / kg = 0.42 kg / h *
* The unit of Q is kg / h because in the operation the kW-kilowatt- are eliminated from the kWh-kilowatt hour- (kWh = kW / h), both from the power and the calorific value. So are the remaining units of the PCS, kilogram (kg) and hour (h).

 Q × T = Consumption

Consumption (cal) = 2.04 kg / h × 6 h / day = 12.24 kg / day
Consumption (DHW) = 2.04 kg / h × 2.5 h / day = 5.1 kg / day
Consumption (coc) = 0.42 kg / h × 1 h / day = 0.42 kg / day
Heating + Hot water + Kitchen = Total consumption

Daily consumption (lime + hot water + coc) = 12.24 + 5.1 + 0.42 = 17.76 kg / day
Monthly consumption (cal + DHW + coc) = 17.76 × 30 days = 532.8 kg / month *
Monthly propane gas consumption
The monthly consumption is calculated by multiplying the daily consumption by 30 days.

Therefore, continuing with the previous example, the family would spend approximately 532.8 kg of propane per month, as represented in the following graph according to each thermal system.

Mixed consumption of propane gas per month
Thermal system    Monthly consumption
Heating    367.2 kg / month
Hot water    153 kg / month
Kitchen    12.6 kg / month
Monthly total    532.8 kg / month

Table 2. Average consumption of heating, domestic hot water and propane gas cooking per month.

It should be noted that both the values of the formula and the consumption results are just an example , since the data related to your home and its equipment may vary depending on the case.

Heating: boiler consumption

Almost half of the energy used by Spanish families is to heat their homes.

Therefore, if you want to know how much the propane gas heating in your home consumes, you must carry out the operation (previously explained) according to the parameters of this system.

C (cal) = (P ÷ PCS) × T

C (cal) : Heating consumption

P (cal) = 28.5 kW

PCS = 13.97 kWh / kg

T (cal) = 6 h / day

1st | P (power) ÷ PCS (calorific power) = Q (burned gas)

28.5 kW ÷ 13.97 kWh / kg = 2.040085898 kg / h

2nd | Q (flared gas) × T (time) = C (cal)

2.04 kg / hx 6 h / day = 12.24 kg / day

How to program your boiler?

The most widely used equipment are boilers, specifically those with a mixed system, since they can provide heating and domestic hot water at the same time and reduce fuel consumption.

According to the IDAE (Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy), the comfort temperature in homes should be between 19 ° C and 21 ° C, so the use of boilers or radiators for propane gas heating should be programmed according to the following operating conditions.

Thermal jump : It is necessary to generate 50 ° C more heat than the desired temperature.
Program the supply and return system in boilers or radiators at 10 ° C below and above the temperature of the thermal jump
Boilers, radiators and underfloor heating have a heat input and output system called impulsion and return, which allows us to make the thermal jump we want, that is, to produce that extra heat to be able to maintain the comfort temperature for longer.

Calculation to program your boiler (example)

To obtain a comfort temperature of 20 ° C, it is necessary to generate the thermal jump of 70 ° C (50 ° C extra heat).

How is that extra heat generated? Programming your boiler system 10 ° C below and above as appropriate:

Drive system (inlet): 80 ° C
Return system (outlet): 60 ° C
Therefore, according to these considerations, when installing the propane gas heating system by radiators or boilers, two temperatures must be programmed:

Drive: 80 ° C
Return: 60 ° C
However, you must bear in mind that for every degree that we increase the temperature, energy consumption increases by approximately 7%. In addition, at night it is ensured that, in the bedrooms, it is enough to have a temperature of 15º to 17ºC to feel comfortable.

With all this, there are other factors that help reduce the consumption of propane gas heating , such as:

  • Insulation of the house : in windows, floors, doors, attics, air ducts, etc.
  • Type of boiler : condensing, low temperature or underfloor heating, they are more efficient than conventional boilers.
  • Thermostat : allows you to control the temperature to your liking so that consumption is under control of the tenant.
  • Additional sources of heating : fireplaces, underfloor heating, pellet boilers, etc., help to balance fuel consumption.
  • Current energy : comparing the consumption of your current energy with others, such as electricity, fuels ( natural gas , propane, butane , diesel), biomass, coal, among others, helps to

Hot water: heater / boiler consumption

According to the IDAE, domestic hot water (DHW) is the second system with the highest consumption in homes or businesses after heating, since an average consumption of 20% is estimated.

Therefore, it is important to note that the temperature at which you program the boiler directly influences fuel consumption, in this case, propane gas.

Here is an example of how to calculate the average consumption of the water heater .

C (acs) = (P ÷ PCS) × T

C (DHW) : Domestic hot water consumption

P (acs) = 28.5 kW

PCS = 13.97 kWh / kg

T (acs) = 2.5 h / day

1st | P (power) ÷ PCS (calorific power) = Q (burned gas)

28.5 kW ÷ 13.97 kWh / kg = 2.040085898 kg / h

2nd | Q (flared gas) × T (time) = C (hot water)

2.04 kg / hx 2.5 h / day = 5.1 kg / day

Likewise, as we explained previously with the programming of the boiler temperature , the water heater must also be programmed according to the thermal jump and the impulsion and return system.

Therefore, if you have the water heater set at 80ºC, it will consume much more than if you had it at 50 or 60ºC . Call Selectra, the energy experts, if you have any questions.

Propane cooking: consumption of stoves and ovens

Consumption in propane gas cookers
Unlike heating and hot water, to calculate the consumption in the kitchen you must take into account all the appliances that consume propane gas, such as, for example, the fire stove and the oven.

With this, to get the total of the power of all the devices, you must add all the powers.

For example, the total power of the kitchen can be considered to be 6 kW when:

The four-burner stove = 2 kW
The oven = 4 kW
C (coc) = (P ÷ PCS) × T

C (coc) : Kitchen consumption

P (coc) = 6 kW

PCS = 13.97 kWh / kg

T (coc) = 1 h / day

1st | P (power) ÷ PCS (calorific power) = Q (burned gas)

6 kW ÷ 13.97 kWh / kg = 0.4294917681 kg / h

2nd | Q (gas burned) × T (time) = C (coc)

0.42 kg / hx 1 h / day = 0.42 kg / day

However, it should be noted that the above data is only an example of the average time (T) and power (P) and may vary depending on the appliance or appliance.

How to understand my propane gas bill?

Unlike cylinders, the only formats that have an itemized bill are those that have a tank installed, either individual (bulk propane) or community (piped), because they depend on the kilograms -kg- of consumption.

However, the difference between the bulk and piped propane gas bill is that the former is charged before the fuel is consumed; On the other hand, the second is charged like natural gas, through the meter of each home once it has been consumed.
