How to Make Artificial Flowers

Want a cool craft project idea to decorate your home or give away to someone? It's simple: just make artificial flowers! You only need coffee filters, tissues or fabric scraps if you opt for something simpler. On the other hand, if you want more realistic flowers, use colored materials and make a special arrangement with the petals. Otherwise, just read the tips in this article!

Method 1 Making flowers with coffee filters

1
Soak coffee filters in a solution of water and ink to make colorful flowers. Transfer about 3 tablespoons (45 ml) of acrylic paint or latex to a large pot or bowl and add ½ cup (120 ml) of water until the two substances are mixed. Then add another 2 cups (470 ml) of water and immerse up to 20 coffee filters in the solution. Wait between two and three minutes if you prefer them to fade or up to 15 minutes if you prefer stronger colors. [1]

  • You can use any size filters you like, but keep in mind that this affects the size of the flowers.
  • You can skip this first step if you want to make white flowers.

Tip: Use and abuse your imagination when mixing different colors! For example, add pink and yellow to make coral-hued flowers.

2
Collect and dry filters in a single layer. Once the filters have acquired the desired color, pick them up with tweezers or your fingers and let excess paint drip into the pan or bowl. Then arrange the material on a grid, colander, or other such surface. Filters will dry much faster if they are distributed in a single layer. [two]

  • Filters will dry within 20 or 30 minutes, depending on the weather.

3
Take a filter and cut it into a spiral shape. Open one of the filters and cut it into a spiral shape with sharp scissors. This spiral should be an inch wide until you reach the center. [3]

  • You can stretch the ends of the filter and make a longer, thinner strip when you're done cutting the spiral.

4
Cut a 12-inch piece of masking tape and glue the spiral to it through the center. Take a 12-inch piece of tape and place it on the table with the sticky side up. Then place the filter in a spiral about 2.5 cm from the tip. [4]

  • Use the rounded end of the filter so that it is in the middle of the final flower.
  • Use green masking tape to simulate a simple flower stem.

5
Nail and glue the filter onto the bottom half of the masking tape. Just fold the filter on itself until it forms a kind of accordion. Squeeze the material against the bottom half of the tape and continue until finished. [5]

  • Leave space at the top of the masking tape for you to include the flower stem later.
  • At the end of this process, the filter will be pleated and glued onto the adhesive tape.

6
Glue the end of the ribbon to a straw and roll it up. Place the end of a straw into the bottom half of the ribbon, without touching the filter itself. Then, rotate the material until you reach the other end of the adhesive to finish forming the flower. [6]

  • You can also use a piece of wire or a plastic stem from another artificial flower if you don't have a straw nearby.

7
Wrap a piece of green ribbon around the straw to finish the stem. Cut a long piece of green masking tape and glue it near the base of the flower. Then pass it diagonally until you reach the base of the straw. Ready! [7]

  • Make more flowers with the rest of the painted filters!

Method 2 making flowers with tissue paper

1
Cut out ten squares of tissue paper. You can cut squares to any size you like, but keep in mind that this affects the size of the final flowers. For example: make the shapes 3 x 3 inches so the flowers are medium. [8]

  • Cut out ten squares for each flower you intend to make.
  • You can make a pile of several tissues and cut them out at once to speed things up.

Tip: You can layer different colored scarves to create colorful flowers.

2
Create a pile of squares and staple right in the middle. Align the squares along the sides before stapling. Each layer will turn into a different petal. [9]

3
Cut the pile of tissue squares into a circle. Cut a circle in the middle of the tissue pile using sharp scissors. Again, the size of this shape affects the size of the final flowers. [10]

  • You can go around the circle before you start cutting if you want to make the result more accurate.

4
Lift each layer and knead the base with your fingers. Lift each individual layer and pinch the base with your fingers. This serves to create the bent and ruffled texture of the petals. [11]

  • When you're done, the ruffled layer set will look like a flower that's just starting to bloom.

5
Open the flower petals. Use your thumbs to pull each layer of tissue slowly. When you're done, the flower will be round and full-blown. [12]

  • You can leave the final layer of the flower as it is by clipping it into a bouquet!

Method 3 Making flowers out of fabric scraps

1
Gather a few pieces of silk and polyester. Choose pieces of fabric in your favorite color or use several different shades to create realistic flowers. For example: use shades of peach, coral and yellow to make vibrant flowers. [13]

  • If you're using some type of polyester, try picking up bits of fabric from satin, organza, acetate, lace, or something mixed.

2
Cut 24 fabric petals into different sizes to create a flower. You need to cut bean shaped petals into four different sizes for each flower. Try making six silk or polyester petals for each of the following sizes: [14]

  • 7.5 x 4.5 cm.
  • 9 x 5 cm.
  • 11.5 x 6.5 cm.
  • 13.5 x 7.5 cm.

Tip: You can print a template in three sizes from the internet if you're running out of time. Then, just put them all on top of the fabric and make the cutouts of the petals.

3
Light a candle and singe the edges of each petal. Pass each petal close to the candle flame and lightly burn the edges, rotating the material slowly, to make the final flower more realistic. If you are using a thicker fabric, pass it a little closer to the flame still. [15]

  • Don't get too close or take too long to pass the petals close to the candle flame.

4
Take one of the smaller petals and make a stitch with thread and needle. Hold the petal horizontally and curl it until you reach the base. It will represent the center of the flower. Then pass the needle and thread from the bottom to the top to secure the material in this shape. [16]

5
Pass another small petal around the previous one and add one more stitch. Choose one more small petal and attach it to the previous one with the needle, always holding it closely. The flower will start to take shape little by little. [17]

  • Remember to make a point at the base of each new petal.

6
Keep adding new, bigger petals. After attaching the smaller petals, start adding the larger ones until finished. Continue following an ascending order of size. [18]

  • Keep making needle and thread stitches so the flower doesn't fall apart.

Tip: Overlap the petals to make the flower realistic and disguise the line dots.

7
Tie the end of the thread and unfold the petals. Tie a knot at the base of the flower and cut the thread. Then pull the top petals to make it look like it's blooming.
Done: now you can attach the flowers to stems and simulate a bouquet or apply hot glue to make a wreath or wreath.

Tips
Arrange several types of artificial flowers and tie delicate ribbons to the stems.

4 types of fireplace and when to use them!

See the most suitable models of fireplaces for each project:

1- wood burning fireplace

Types of fireplace: wood burning fireplace

Let's start our list of fireplace types with the most traditional one.

Wood is a material with excellent thermal performance, that's why the wood-burning fireplace is indicated for colder places that need the heat distributed between the environments.

When we talk about wood burning fireplace, it is common for people to imagine that classic model made of masonry, but we know that the market offers more options.

In addition to steel, we can also find iron fireplaces.

Fireplace Types: Iron Fireplace

Iron fireplaces have some advantages over masonry, such as glass doors that prevent the passage of smoke into the environment and greater thermal performance.

Attention! When choosing this type of fireplace, the architect needs to pay attention to the floor of the room.

Since burning wood generates sparks, contact of these particles with carpet or fabric can cause fires.

Therefore, the ideal is to use porcelain or ceramic flooring. Another option is to invest in protective screens.

It is also worth remembering that the wood burning fireplace asks for more space in the environment to store the pieces of wood.

Types of fireplace: fireplace with storage space for wood

See more tips to maintain the ideal temperature: discover how to achieve thermal comfort in any environment!

2- Electric fireplace

Fireplace Types: Electric Fireplace

An electric fireplace is a kind of heater that mimics a fireplace. It features a virtual flame, that is, it does not require firewood or gas.

It is possible to mount it on the wall or even use the portable version.

Fireplace Types: Portable Electric Fireplace with 3D

Among its advantages is the fact that it doesn't get dirty and the possibility of fitting in any place with adequate ventilation.

It is not beneficial for daily use as it can consume a lot of energy. Therefore, it is recommended for customers who will not use it very often.

On the other hand, this option is the one that brings more decorative possibilities, bringing a lot of beauty to the environments.

A good choice of fireplaces for apartments are built-in ones, which add charm and security to the room.

3- Gas fireplace

Fireplace Types: Gas Fireplace

In this type of fireplace, the flame is generated by a gas point. The fire heats the volcanic stones, spreading the heat to the environment.

This model, like the previous example, is a great choice of fireplace for apartments or smaller spaces.

The gas fireplace has a lower energy consumption compared to the electric fireplace. For this reason, it can be used for a longer period of time.

Another advantage is the ease of turning it on – just press a button or remote control.

Due to its practicality, it can be installed in various ways or locations, as long as there is a canister or piped gas point.

Small gas fireplaces do not need a chimney. The manufacturer's recommendation is that they be installed in fireplaces over one meter long.

4- Ecological fireplace

Types of fireplace: ecological fireplace

When we talk about types of fireplace, this has been one of the most used options on the market.

Ecological fireplaces (or alcohol fireplaces) are filled with liquid alcohol from cereals.

The fire generated has no smell and also does not smoke. Consequently, there is also no need to make a duct, unless it is an aesthetic option.

This type of fireplace is not suitable for prolonged use, as the flame does not last that long. For this reason, it also doesn't heat up too much, so it's recommended for smaller environments.

One advantage is that it can be a portable fireplace, as there are small and light models.

An example of creative use is to create a suspended fireplace.

Types of fireplace: suspended ecological fireplace

The ecological fireplace is another good option for an apartment fireplace.

Watch out! Even if the ecological fireplace flame is lighter, it is necessary to pay attention to the place where it is installed.

It is common for some architects to place it under furniture or even electronic objects such as TV.

The ecological fireplace flame can heat objects and cause damage and, in more serious cases, fire.

To avoid this problem, use a protection between the fireplace and objects.

Why choose alcohol fireplaces?

Alcohol fireplaces, also called ecological fireplaces, were already featured in our blog. In previous articles, you found out more about the alcohol fireplace and how it can be used in environments. Today, this model of fireplace is back to the subject around here. Discover why choose alcohol fireplaces for your home or professional environment.

Alcohol fireplaces
As the name already indicates, alcohol fireplaces use fluid alcohol for fireplaces, 92º ethyl alcohol or ethanol as fuel to generate efficient heating, with little heat loss and generating very low emissions.

Working autonomously and for up to four hours, the alcohol fireplace can be used in any environment, as it does not require major renovations and chimney installations. The user can also choose to embed the fireplace in furniture, on the floor or on the wall, or use the portable model that adapts to spaces, whether indoors or outdoors.

The alcohol fireplace heats the environment by spreading hot air. And since there is no need for ducts and chimneys, there is no heat loss in the environment.

Thus, it can be said that alcohol fireplaces provide heating with almost 100% of thermal efficiency , against only 10/15% of conventional open fireplaces, whether wood or gas.

However, it is important to emphasize that the flames resulting from the combustion of alcohol burners reach 350/400ºC, thus affecting all materials in their surroundings. Consult the technical support of the fireplace manufacturer or author of the project, in order to verify the suitability of the materials to be used in the fireplace or decorative arrangement.

Why Invest in an Alcohol Fireplace?
The fireplaces alcohol stand out in the market because they have many benefits and facilities to users.

Among the main features of this model, we can mention:

  • lower installation cost;
  • of total freedom to the designer in the conception of their project;
  • modern design;
  • freedom of installation – no need for chimney or power lines;
  • effective heating and thermal comfort when perfectly sized – consult specialists;
  • safety in handling;
  • true flame;
  • provides cheap energy;
  • high thermal efficiency – 100%;
  • ease and practicality of use;
  • non-toxic, if the manufacturer presents valid certification;
  • ecological and sustainable product;
  • requires no maintenance;
  • and much more!

If you still have doubts about the efficiency of the alcohol fireplace, check out some advantages that this model offers to users:

1. Ease of switching on and off
When compared to the traditional wood-burning fireplace, the alcohol fireplace model provides much easier lighting and shutdown.

To use the equipment, just pour the alcohol directly into the chamber opening and use a lighter with a metal rod to light the flames.

To extinguish the fire, or to end the combustion, the user only needs to close the burner opening with the lid that comes with the product. Very easy, isn't it?

2. Cleaning
Don't worry about soot, smoke or ash. The best ecological fireplaces are made of stainless steel and, at the end of the operation, they are ready to be reused.

3. Freedom in decoration
Due to its modern design, the alcohol fireplace can compose almost any room in an adequate and elegant way, without interfering or harming the existing decoration.

The models can be finished in glass, wood, marble, iron, stone, stainless steel and several other materials that complement the space without changing its initial proposal and personality.

3.Does not eliminate smoke or odors
Unlike the wood burning fireplace, which produces smoke and eliminates the characteristic smell of burning, the alcohol fireplace does not generate pollutants in the environment. Therefore, this model is the most suitable for houses and apartments.

As long as the fireplace is lit, there is no elimination of odors. And when the flame is extinguished or at its end of use, a small smell appears in the environment, however, the odor is quickly dissipated.

4. Greater comfort and warmth
Alcohol fireplaces are great options when it comes to warming the room and making it more comfortable.

The pleasant heat produced by these fireplaces is capable of heating even larger rooms evenly and constantly, ensuring warmth and thermal comfort during the coldest days.

But remember: the heating capacity of the fireplace will depend on the power of the chosen model. Therefore, when choosing yours, consider the size of the integrated areas and the purpose of the fireplace (heating or just decoration).

5.Eco-friendly
As already mentioned, the alcohol fireplace is also called an ecological fireplace , as it does not use firewood or petroleum-derived fuels to work.

Burning alcohol, which is a renewable energy source, does not produce toxic or harmful waste to the environment and people's health.

Thus, the alcohol fireplace is ideal for use in residential or commercial environments, whether in public or private spaces.

Gas Fireplace: How does it work and what is the best model?

One of the most desired decor items these days are fireplaces. And so, like many high-demand products, there are many types of fireplaces. The traditional wood-burning fireplace is lagging behind, being used less and less. As a more attractive alternative the gas fireplace has become the most sought after. However, your installation must be well planned to avoid problems in the future. That is, it is important to have the help of an expert before making any decision.

That's why we've gathered in this article some important information for you who are thinking of purchasing a gas fireplace.

First, how does a gas fireplace work?

How does a gas fireplace work?

The gas fireplace is very practical and functional. At first, it only needs a copper tubing, a valve where it is placed, a safety device that cuts off the fuel output if the flame goes out, and a gas point that is where the flame comes from.

The gas can be natural (street gas) or liquefied, known as cooking gas. It is interesting to have an independent registry, so that in cases of maintenance it is not necessary to cut off the gas in the entire house. Its activation is done by a button, similar to a stove or even by a remote control.

Smaller fireplaces, on the other hand, do not need to have a chimney, however, it is recommended for the carbon dioxide from burning to go away more quickly. Still, it is also recommended that the room be ventilated.

The gas fireplace can have two models:

  • The “linear fireplaces” that have volcanic stones and need a masonry niche to be placed. This niche is a box with a central space where the fireplace fits.
  • The “ceramic wood” is a false firewood that stays on top of the burner imitating traditional wood.

The Advantages of a Gas Fireplace

The main advantage of a gas fireplace is that it does not emit smoke or soot. Consequently, they do not dirty the environment. You don't feel “smoky” from being in a smoky place. As it does not smoke, it can be installed anywhere in the house, not to mention that it does not generate ash from wood burning. In other words, there is no need to worry about cleaning, saving you time.

This model also does not have a constant supply demand, as happens with wood-burning fireplaces. Thus, they allow for more comfort and practicality. The gas fireplace avoids the heavy work of buying, storing and handling wood.

In this type of fireplace, the heating of the volcanic stones lasts longer, even if the fire is low. That is, it keeps the environment warmer beyond what is conventionally expected.

Choosing a gas fireplace optimizes the environment, making room for other decorative pieces, as it does not need a large space to be placed. They can be installed in houses or apartments, in places such as living rooms, bedrooms, offices, terraces, etc.

Another advantage of the gas fireplace is that it can be custom made to exact specifications. You can even opt for one or two lines of fire. It can be cooktop model, box format, among many other models. Likewise, you can choose the type of finish you want, making it a unique and exclusive decorative accessory.

Although the gas fireplace has a certain significant initial cost, with its installation, the operating costs are lower than decorative electric or ethanol fireplaces, for example.

How to choose an Electric Fireplace? Advantages and disadvantages

The electric fireplaces have gained market position over the years and are so sought after as traditional fireplaces, above all, because they are safer, practical and efficient.

If in other times the fireplace was used to heat the house, nowadays it is also a decorative element.

Are you looking for an electric fireplace but unsure of the best option? Read on and have all the necessary information!

What are electric fireplaces and how do they work?
Electric fireplaces are electric heaters that look like a traditional fireplace, but with different designs. There are even models that show the typical flame and the image of a burning log.

As the name implies, electric fireplaces do not require firewood, coal, pellets or any other raw material for combustion. Just have access to electricity.

Therefore, you don't need extra space for storing firewood.

It should also be noted that, as there is no burning of raw materials, there is no ash scattered on the floor or soot accumulated on the walls.

These fireplaces are safer than traditional ones.

The protective glass does not heat up either. It is an extremely advantageous heating option for those who have children at home or want to install the fireplace in a public space frequented by many people.

Another benefit is that you don't need works or a chimney to enjoy this heating solution.

Different types and models of electric fireplaces
Electric fireplaces are increasingly popular in interior design because they add a touch of elegance and refinement to the home , in addition to warming any room.

If your main question is with the choice of model, don't worry, there are several types of electric fireplaces available.

You have at your disposal equipment with different sizes, contemporary finishes – different and bold – and a technology that allows the visualization of the flame.

Electric center or wall fireplace?
The wall- mounted electric fireplace is perfect for an apartment or smaller house , as it does not require any permanent installation and you can change it whenever you want.

Another benefit is that it can be installed directly on the wall, even under the television, it won't heat up or damage the equipment. However, you must follow the assembly guidelines for each product.

The center fireplace can be placed in the center of a room/room. Of course, this type of solution will be more suitable for an open space.

Opti-Virtual Single and Double Technology

There is still another question that you will have to consider when looking for an electric fireplace: do you want to have equipment that offers the illusion of fire?

Opti-Virtual technology gives you the ability to see realistic flames, hear the crackling noise of firewood and sparks jumping.

The presentation of video and sound make the experience rich and realistic!

You can choose two dimensions according to the available space: single or double.

Size and finish of your electric fireplace (ceramic, iron, etc.)
The size and finish of the electric fireplace is varied, just like any other type of equipment, so you can have several options to choose from.

These equipments offer several types of finishes such as:

  • Sheet metal and glass;
  • Masonry with porcelain;
  • Wood;
  • Rustic wood;
  • Natural Stones;
  • Metal.

Advantages and Disadvantages of an Electric Fireplace

Electric fireplaces have the main advantage of producing heat, as the energy produced is converted into light and heat.

Another benefit of this solution is that it does not need works or a chimney for its installation. The equipment can be mounted in any room in the house.

In addition to the electric fireplace producing more heat than the traditional fireplace, this one is 100% used and can control its intensity.

The user does not need to carry out any maintenance or cleaning of the equipment, as it is electrical.

Despite the immense advantages of the electric fireplace, it should be noted that one of the main disadvantages is its purchase value , which is superior to a traditional wood or gas fireplace.

The consumption of the electric fireplace is higher than any of the other fireplaces, and if there is an electrical failure, the equipment cannot work.

What to look out for when buying an electric fireplace?

Before buying an electric fireplace you should take some points into consideration, these are:

  • Power – For the equipment to heat the room/house as you want, you need to take the power into account, as well as the geographic location, thermal insulation of the house, among others.
  • Purchase cost - Electric fireplaces are more aesthetically appealing than any other heating equipment, but you should consider their value.
  • Thermal performance – Will the equipment have the desired performance? If you think it pays off in relation to other solutions, then you should bet on this equipment.
  • Operating cost – Review the cost of kWh generated and weighted by thermal efficiency. Remember that it is useless to have a low energy consumption if the equipment has low thermal efficiency.
