  • Shake and air the pillow every day . In this way you help redistribute the filling so that it does not lose its properties and firmness, and at the same time you avoid the accumulation of dust.
  • Try to wash the pillow very infrequently , only if it is strictly necessary. Washing can impair the preservation of the properties of the pillow filling.

One trick to help keep your pillow filling from caking is to add two or three tennis balls to the washing machine. It is not recommended to dry clean the pillow as the fabric may be damaged.
  • When you are not using the pillow, store it in its cotton bag for better conservation.

  • Keep the pillow in a cool and dry place , avoiding places with humidity.

How to wash pillows?

 How to wash pillows?

For hygiene and health reasons it is really necessary to carry out frequent maintenance of the pillows . For the reasons that you will learn below, I will let you know the methods to disinfect, clean and even remove stains from your pillow .

- How to wash pillows and Pillows Product

Recommendations for washing pillows

You should know that experts recommend that the pillow be changed every 2 years , because millions of bacteria and mites proliferate there, which are harmful and can trigger allergies and more diseases, especially related to the respiratory tract. However, in that period of time it must be washed regularly , recommended three times a year, and a maximum of 6 months.

One way to know if your pillow is too old is to fold it in half , and if it stays in that position it means that you should replace it before it causes worse damage, ideally it should unfold progressively.

Visualize the affected area

If your pillow has a yellowish color or any stain, follow the bleaching and disinfecting steps before proceeding to wash. If you prefer to disinfect later, check the steps with which you can do it.

Cover: Remove and wash

The first thing you will do is remove the cover from your pillow and wash it in the washing machine or by hand , in the way you want. I recommend that you do not apply detergents with very strong odors that can cause allergies.

If your covers are white, or you are washing the one that came with the pillow, due to time they may have a yellowish color , to return them to their original color you can pour a splash of bleach together with the detergent , this in addition to cleaning the stains has components disinfectants.

Pillow manufacturer recommendations

Look for the label of your pillow and read what is described there to know the washing method to use. Some pillows cannot be machine washed because they may lose their shape or function.

Stuffing of affected pillows

Depending on the cushioning material of the pillow, it will be the delicacy and the way to clean them . So you should know if your pillow is made of cotton, feathers, synthetic material, elastic vico, latex, among others.

Take a good look at the pillow

You should pay attention that your pillow does not have any tears on the edges where the thread is . In this way you can be sure that you will not lose padding in the wash. If so, you do not have to worry, before proceeding to wash, take care of joining the parts with white thread and when finished cut and tie a knot.

Pillow washing

Carry out this procedure taking into account what is described in the manufacturer's recommendations and the filling , since the material and the recommendations are the way to know how to wash.

Essential steps for pillow washing

WASHING MACHINE

Put the pillows in the washing machine . Preferably two to take care of the shape.

Add a cup of detergent . I remind you that it is better to use one with a mild smell.

To completely remove the soap from the pillow, set the washing machine to rinse with water a second time .

Wait for its drying time to finish , and place it in a place where it is in the sun or use the dryer.

NOTE: if your pillow has stains, apply bleach in a small amount in the compartment where you introduced the detergent or, according to the system of your washing machine, in the box symbolized with a triangle especially to introduce this product.

BY HAND

Place the pillow (s) on a slide where you can cover them with water.

Fill the slide with enough warm water and apply the detergent of your choice, taking into account what is recommended above.

Then wait (15 min approx.) For the product to work on the pillow and make it easier to wash.

You can apply a splash of bleach to bleach .

Get the soap out well with enough water . Make sure there is no detergent left inside, one way to know is to drain the water and verify that it does not have foam or bubbles that indicate the existence of soap internally.

Put the pillows to dry and check that they are not damp inside.

Washing according to the type of pillow

In these methods I am going to give you the ways to carry out the washing process according to the material , this means that it depends on your type of pillow, you will follow these recommendations.

Feather pillow

Washing this type of pillow is simple, because you can easily do it in the washing machine following the same instructions that I have left you. The difference is that in addition to the pillows you are going to place 3 or 4 tennis balls in stockings so that they do not undergo any change in their structure, and that at the end you will put them to dry in the open air , in the case of using the dryer set it so that you apply air but not hot . Check the pillows from time to time and shake them to separate the feathers .

Latex pillow

For this type of pillow, it is advisable to wash by hand . Follow the steps indicated above with cold water and for washing, after waiting for the soaking time, a sponge to remove the dirt from the surface . For drying you can place it outdoors , moreover , do not let the sun shine on it.

Vicoelastic or memory foam pillow

This material is delicate , so it must be hand washed with due subtlety . To carry out this process, follow the steps for a hand wash above. To dry this pillow, it is better that you dry it in the open air where the sun hits it , but do not leave it for too long , check that it is completely dry and remove it, the process can be a bit slow because this material tends to absorb a lot of water. This type of pillow usually has anti-mite and antibacterial treatments , so as not to lower its functionality it is recommended that it be washed less frequently (4 to 6 months).

Synthetic material pillows

Follow either of the two processes indicated in the washing form , both in the washing machine and by hand. While they dry, shake them to hold their shape and you can air dry them or with a dryer set on warm air or air, not hot .

Whiten and disinfect your pillow

If in the washing process, not even the splash of bleach, improved the yellowish appearance, do the following, in addition to disinfecting the pillows from bacteria and mites:

Borax, dishwasher, detergent, and bleach

To handle these products wear gloves and a mask . After placing the pillows in the washing machine drawer, apply 1 cup of detergent, eco-friendly dishwasher, and bleach that does not contain chlorine ; ½ cup of borax and finally the water, previously boiled until it covers the pillow, set the washing machine for the normal cycle and dry them in the open air .

Water and Lemon

Before washing, in two and a half liters of water, previously boiled, squeeze 6 lemons . Pour the preparation into a container where the pillow fits and then place it in the liquid and let it act for 120 min. Put to dry after washing with the steps above.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

Put the pillows in the washing machine, program the washing machine for a normal wash , and when they are covered with water, add 120 ml of vinegar and 80 g of previously unified bicarbonate . Wait for the process to finish and lay the pillows outside .

Hydrogen peroxide and lemon

Pour 125cc of lemon extract and 250cc of hydrogen peroxide into a container the size of a pillow and fill it with previously boiled water . Put the pillow in the liquid and wait for it to act for 60 min. Later, wash it with the aforementioned process.

How to wash pillows

The best solution to care / wash your pillow is to use pillowcases (see them on Amazon) , since in this way we will only have to wash the cover without having to clean the pillow.

How to wash a memory foam pillow?

Memory foam pillows (including Tempur , aloe vera, and memory foam pillows ) and gel pillows wash in the same way. We will explain it in detail below.

Can memory foam or gel pillows be washed in the washing machine?

First of all, we must bear in mind that memory foam pillows CAN NOT be washed in the washing machine (either aloe vera or some other treatment).

They also cannot be completely soaked because they would lose all the qualities they had when buying them. Also, they will not dry properly, and mold and dirt will end up originating in them, thus favoring the appearance of bacteria and mites.

In any case, if we never wash our pillow, it will also deteriorate and lose its qualities.

If the pillow only suffers from bad odors, we recommend ventilating it and leaving it in the sun for an hour. If the bad smell still persists, then prepare a mixture of vinegar and water and spray the affected area, use very little, just a few drops (ideally use a spray or dispenser).

Now wait a few minutes and dry it with a towel, then put baking soda on top and let it work for 8 hours and remove it with the vacuum cleaner.

And ready! Now you know how to wash your memory foam pillow safely.

How to wash a memory foam or gel pillow by hand?

On the other hand, if the pillow has been stained with some liquid, then it does require a deeper wash. At Alsobre we recommend washing it by hand, the washing machine is prohibited with this type of pillows.

First of all, look at the pillow label and manufacturer's instructions. If these instructions allow machine washing and it is a memory foam or gel pillow, we recommend NOT doing it, wash it by hand because the chances of loading it are quite high.

To wash the memory foam or gel pillow, we must first prepare a container with a mixture of  hot or warm water and mild washing machine detergent for delicate garments (DO NOT USE: bleach, bleach, fabric softener, or enzyme detergent).

You can imagine the next step, we have to take a cloth, submerge it in the container, drain it VERY well and rub in circular movements. And the third and last step is to dry it, for this we will press the wet part of the pillow so that the water comes out with the help of a towel and thus absorb it (the better we do this step, the faster it will dry).

Finally we will let it dry in a flat place without humidity, you can also help with a fan to speed up the process. The drying part is the most important, you must make sure that the pillow is completely dry , otherwise mold will develop.

How to wash a latex pillow?

Latex is a more resistant material to water than viscoelastic, however a wash in which they are soaked whole can be dangerous .

There are several models and depending on which one you have you have one option or another.

Can latex pillows be machine washed?

The answer to this question is it depends on what model you have. As for latex pillows, there are some models that allow machine washing and others do not. Read the manufacturer's instructions , if they don't say anything about washing, then do it by hand.

How to wash a latex pillow by hand?

To wash latex pillows by hand, the exact same process is followed as viscoelastic or gel pillows (in the previous section). The only difference is in the drying, and that is that these types of pillows do not feel very well in the sun , it is best to dry them where it is not directly hitting them.

Remember that it has to be completely dry before using or storing it and that the best option is to use pillowcases and wash them frequently without having to clean the pillow itself. You can wash a latex pillow in the washing machine as long as the manufacturer indicates it.

How to wash feather or down pillows?

Feather or down pillows can be washed both in the washing machine and by hand . If you want to wash them by hand, the process is the same as with the memory foam and gel pillow.

How to wash a feather or down pillow or cushion in the washing machine?

If you are going to wash them in the washing machine, you must take certain precautions. First of all,  read the manufacturer's instructions and make sure it does not have any small holes , otherwise you will lose the filling during the wash and we will run out of pillow.

You should use a mild detergent  for delicate items (no bleach, no bleach, no fabric softener, no enzyme detergent).

The washing machine program must be a special wash for delicate clothes (usually acrylic or sportswear).

Now put the pillow in the washing machine with two tennis balls so that the feathers do not become caked (if you do not have clean tennis balls, cover them with socks so they will not get dirty).

The next step is to rinse it with the centrifuge program, do it at low rpm and repeat this process to speed up drying, then take it to the bathtub and press it gently to remove the remaining water.

And the last step is drying, if you have a dryer it is ideal , you just have to put the pillow in and set a low temperature, but for a longer time than usual.

If you don't have a dryer, this process is a bit more tedious, you have to put it in a flat place (if the sun's rays are powerful, leave it in the shade, as yellow spots could appear) and that it is not damp.

During this process you will have to turn it over to change sides three times a day , it should not take more than 48 hours to dry. If you want to learn how to wash your duvet, you have to read this article.

How to wash fiber pillows?

Do you already have your Nordic filling for this winter? Look at this selection , they are very economical without sacrificing quality.

How to wash a smart pillow?

There are two main types of smart pillows.

On the one hand we have the breathable ones , they are made of synthetic materials such as microfiber, silicone hollow fiber, polyurethane ... On the other hand, we have the molded ones , the latter use a viscoelastic or very similar material.

We can wash the breathable ones in the washing machine without any problem, as if it were any microfiber pillow.

The molded ones do not, because if we soak them in water they lose their memory foarm properties (adaptive capacity and recovery of their shape). So we must clean them by hand.

To find out which group the pillow belongs to, we recommend that you look at the manufacturer's label, and depending on their material, you can find out if they are breathable or molded.

However, if you are not sure which type it belongs to, DO NOT play it, wash it by hand.

How to wash a smart pillow by hand?

To wash a smart pillow by hand you follow exactly the same process as with a memory foam pillow, I will repeat it one more time just in case ...

We prepare a mixture with warm or hot water and mild washing machine detergent (it does not matter if it is powder or liquid), DO NOT use bleach, bleach, fabric softeners, or enzyme detergent.

Then we take a clean cloth, we immerse it in the solution, we drain it well to remove the excess water and gently rub in a circular way over the area you want to clean.

And to finish we have the drying, you can use a dryer, but if you are not familiar with it, better not use it, if you use it, use a low temperature and leave it twice as long. If you do not want to use a dryer, you will only have to hang it in a place that does not have too much humidity.

It is very important that you let it dry completely , make sure it is well, because otherwise it could cause fungus or mold.

There are probably people who want to clean the entire pillow and not just a part, but there is no other way, you will have to rub all over the pillow with patience if this is your case. I will not tire of repeating that the best option is to buy a cover and thus you will not have to wash the pillow but the cover.

How to wash moldy pillows?

First of all, tell you that if your pillow has mold, it is probably because it got wet and was not allowed to dry completely before using it, so from now on make sure that the drying is complete.

If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't hesitate to buy myself any pillow before cleaning this one, but that's just my point of view.

It is possible to remove mold completely, we will follow one procedure or another depending on whether your pillow can be washed in the washing machine or not:

Remove mold from machine washable pillows

Fiber, polyurethane, silicone hollow fiber, microfiber, feather, down, or wool pillows are generally machine washable, however check the manufacturer's label.

If your pillows are made of down, feathers or wool, put 3 tennis balls in the washing machine to prevent the material from caking.

  • 1- First, spray generously with a stain remover on the affected area, let it take effect for about a quarter of an hour.
  • 2- Second, put the pillow in the washing machine , use the maximum temperature recommended by the manufacturer, if you cannot find the manufacturer's temperature, I recommend that you do not exceed 60ºC and instead of using detergent, use a glass of white vinegar.
  • 3- Then wash it again in the washing machine with a mild detergent , try to make this last program long, the longer the better for it to take effect (DO NOT use: bleach, bleach, fabric softener. Enzyme detergent).
  • 4- Dry them, you can hang them, leave them in the window, give them direct sunlight (if possible) and try to avoid humid places. LET IT DRY COMPLETELY.

Remove mold from non- machine washable pillows

In general, the pillows that can NOT be washed in the washing machine are memory foam, Tempur pillows, intelligent pillows, latex pillows (these will inevitably suffer after the process), memory foarm pillows, and aloe vera pillows. ..

If you have a latex pillow, it will suffer in the drying process.

Here is the step by step to clean a moldy pillow by hand:

  • 1- Prepare  a mixture  of table salt (normal sea salt), the juice of a lemon and a little water.
  • 2- We immerse a sponge in the solution, drain very very well (we must avoid that the pillow gets too soaked) and  rub in a circular way on the affected areas with mold.
  • 3- Rub and drain as many times as you need to remove mold.
  • 4- When you finish you should let the pillow dry in a place where the sun shines directly , it is essential that it be in the sun, because it will favor the complete elimination of bacteria.

Latex pillows cannot be exposed to direct sunlight for several hours at a time, which is why they will irretrievably deteriorate.

FEATHER PILLOW: TIPS FOR PROPER CARE

FEATHER PILLOW: TIPS FOR PROPER CARE

How to wash a feather pillow

Having a good pillow is a key factor for daily rest. This is why they must be properly cared for, even more so in the case of feather pillows  because they are a natural product. These pillows stand out for their durability and softness, a fact that leads them to be preferred by many people. If you are one of those who have chosen a feather pillow, it is essential to know how to wash it.

- FEATHER PILLOW: TIPS FOR PROPER CARE and Pillows Product

Washing feather or down pillows is easy, in fact you can make them as fluffy as when they were new, something that you will not get with synthetics. First of all, you need to read the label, but as a general rule you can wash the duck feather pillow in the washing machine, they will be perfect if you follow our advice!

It is one of the many benefits of the incredible natural materials that our feather pillows are filled with. They are not only special for the comfort and softness that we love, but also for their easy maintenance.

Their alternative, synthetic pillows, have the great problem of being difficult to maintain since you can often damage it when washing it. Many people fear to wash it and for that reason they end up sleeping on a dirty pillow for years until they give up and buy a new one. In the case of any other clothing this would be unthinkable, right?
Keeping your pillows clean is not only good for you, but also to extend their life.

The key to washing your pillows is to rinse and dry them according to their thickness and density.

Tips for washing feather or down pillows in the washing machine

  • Label:  Read the label and check that it can be put in the washing machine.
  • Preparation:  remove the pillow from the cover and the protector (if you have one). Check that there are no holes. If you find any, sew them so that the pillow does not spoil during washing.
  • Quantity: it  is advisable to put two pillows in the washing machine. In this way, the drum will be more balanced and the pillows will come out of the spin cycle better.
  • Soap:  Use a mild soap without additives in liquid, the washing powder may leave a lot of residue
  • Water temperature:  it is recommended to use warm or cold water so that the feathers are not damaged. If you want you can use hot water on occasion to kill the mites that may be inside the pillow.
  • Rinse:  Add an extra rinse cycle to make sure all the soap is gone.
  • Spin speed - use the fastest speed your washer has to remove as much moisture as possible

Some extra tips:

  • Whitening:  if you want to bleach the pillow, always use a non-chlorine bleach
  • Fabric Softener:  the manufacturers do NOT recommend using them because they can cover the natural softness of the down or feathers.

How to dry a feather pillow

When drying a feather pillow, you need to make sure that they don't have too much moisture. If you see that there is still some moisture, you can squeeze the pillow with a towel. To do this, place the pillow between two towels and press it between them. This will allow the excess water to disappear.

As mentioned above, make sure the pillow can be tumbled dry. If you cannot or prefer not to use the dryer, it is advisable to let the pillow air dry, in a flat place and avoid moving them until they are completely dry.

Tips for Tumble Drying Feather or Down Pillows

If, on the contrary, you prefer to use the dryer, the ideal will be a gentle cycle.

  • Temperature:  You can choose to dry at a high temperature or one at a cold temperature. Keep in mind that a high temperature will help you dry them faster, but can damage the feathers. Conversely, cold drying will make them take longer to dry, but will be safer.
  • Drying time:  be patient, drying may take several cycles depending on the machine.
  • Agglomerates or odors: The most important thing when drying a down or feather pillow is to dry it completely to avoid mold. If it becomes caked or smells funny (bad), it will be a sign that it is not yet dry.
  • Dry test:  To avoid the previous step, always do a last test to the touch by squeezing the pillow well. It is always better to err for more drying time than for less.

Some extra tips:
Use tennis balls or drying:  One tip that will help you keep feather pillows fluffy is the use of drying balls. If you don't have, you can use tennis balls. Place them on top of the pillow and let them accompany your pillows in drying. If you want to add a bonus to drying, also introduce a thick towel. In this way you will eliminate excess water on your pillows.
Refresh your pillow:  if you want to give it extra freshness, you can use dryer sheets during drying.

To get them fluffy like the first day, once you take the pillows out of the dryer, grab them by the corners and shake them. Then put some clean covers on them. It is very important that you never use the pillows if there is any moisture left as the feathers could rot or create mold.

How often do you have to wash feather pillows?

The recommended frequency is six months but this will depend a lot on the person. Why? Our pillows fill with skin cells, dirt and dander just like our beds. It is the reality of our bodies every day, in addition they also collect sweat and even saliva that can spoil our pillow. Of course, using pillowcases helps as they will capture most of these "downsides." The pillow protector can easily wash your sheets together but do not forget to extend the life of your pillow have to wash it .

Maintenance and cleaning of memory foam pillows

Maintenance and cleaning of memory foam pillows

At Colchones.es we usually place great emphasis on the importance of a good mattress that meets our needs. But, to complete and have a good rest, the mattress must go hand in hand with its inseparable companion, the pillow. In today's post we will talk about them, and in particular those made with memory foam , we will see how to take care of them and clean them so that they remain in perfect condition for longer. We will talk about the maintenance and cleaning of memory foam pillows.

- Maintenance and cleaning of memory foam pillows and Pillows Product

In a previous article, a cleaning expert Pablo Cartagena, responsible for La Colada laundries, gave us cleaning tips to take care of and keep pillows as new. As there are many of you who have asked us more about memory foam pillows and seeing that they are one of our star products , we have decided to write about their care and cleaning.

Memory foam is a highly adaptable material, which eliminates the pressure of the resting surface on the body, thus allowing it to remain in an optimal and healthy position for longer. The memory foam pillows generate a great sensation of relaxation , and allow the head, neck and shoulder muscles to rest comfortably during sleep hours.

But to feel all these properties it is necessary to keep the pillow in good condition. Just like we wash the sheets, the mattress cover, the duvet…, it is necessary to wash the alomahadas. But beware, memory foam pillows, specifically their core does not accept machine washing , if it gets too wet, memory foam can lose its properties, including its memory effect, which makes it regain its original shape once the weight disappears. that is exerted on it.

This fact does not mean that none of its parts can be washed, since the cover that covers the pillow must be cleaned , in this way we will avoid the accumulation of humidity inside, favoring the appearance of mites. Remember that we spend between 6 and 8 hours breathing on them every day. Dirt accumulates!

When washing the cover, it is very important to see the cleaning instructions that appear on the label . On our Colchones.es website, this information is available on each product family -previous image- and we expand it in the pillow file as you can see in the following screenshot belonging to the Belnou Viscoplus pillow .

There are certain occasions that will require a more thorough wash . For example, if we have small children who can vomit, spill liquids, ... we have no choice but to wash. Our recommendation is to do it by hand, prepare a container with warm water and mild soap or a little mild detergent. Use a clean cloth, moisten it, drain it well, and rub and clean the pillow, making circular movements. Afterwards it is important to dry it with a clean towel. Leave it on a flat surface, without humidity so that it dries well. We can also use the vacuum cleaner with care.

In any case, it is very important to use a good protective cover , which can be made of tencel fabric that is 100% waterproof and breathable. We hope this information is useful to you.
