How to Deodorize a Carpet with Baking Soda
How to Deodorize a Carpet with Baking Soda
If your carpet smells funny from spilled food, pet odors, or years of foot traffic, baking soda may be the solution. Using chemicals to remove stains and odors is not good for the environment and can irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. Baking soda is cheap, safe for pets and humans, and easy to use.
- How to Deodorize a Carpet with Baking Soda and Products
Method 1 Clean your carpet with baking soda
one
Vacuum the carpet first. Mixing baking soda with the dirt will not be very effective. Ideally, start with a carpet that is as clean as possible. Vacuum your rug to pick up any large dirt particles or loose fibers. The sole of your shoes has oil and dirt in it, and constant contact with your carpet can grind up the surface of your carpet and leave dirt on the fibers.
two
Once your carpet is as clean as possible, tell your family that you are cleaning the carpet and ask that no one walk on it while you apply the baking soda treatment.
3
If the carpet is in an area with a lot of foot traffic, you may need to clean it in sections.
4
Sprinkle the baking soda over the area you want to treat. Plan to use at least one (or two) boxes of baking soda. You have to cover your carpet completely, so that it is difficult to tell what color it is. Since baking soda is not harmful to humans or pets, you should sprinkle generously. [1]
5
Since baking soda tends to be lumpy, it may help to pour it into a shaker before applying it. This will help you distribute it more evenly.
6
Use fresh baking soda and not one that has been open in your refrigerator. A fresh, unopened box will absorb more odors.
7
Scrub the carpet. Use a dry brush or sponge to scrub the baking soda deep into the fibers of the carpet, so that you get to the bottom. You will need to do this if your carpet has a lot of long fibers; you should make sure that each part is well covered with baking soda.
8
If you're worried about ruining the texture of the rug, use an old sock or t-shirt to scrub it, rather than scrub it.
9
At this point, it's best not to walk on the carpet until you've finished the job.
10
Let the baking soda sit for several hours or overnight. If you can let it sit for 24 hours, it will be much better. The longer it sits, the better the results. Baking soda naturally neutralizes and absorbs odors, rather than masking them.
11
During this time, try to stay away from the carpet so that you don't carry the baking soda to other places in the house.
12
If you see a spot on the carpet that hasn't been covered by the baking soda, fill it in. It's not going to work unless it actually reaches all parts of the odor-infused carpet.
13
Vacuum up the baking soda. Work slowly as it will take some time. You will have to clean each section of the rug several times to finish the job. [2] As long as it doesn't get wet, the baking soda will work.
Method 2 Deal With Stronger Odors
one
Vacuum your carpet after the first baking soda treatment. Was the bad smell neutralized? One treatment will be enough to neutralize most bad smells. If the rug had a particularly strong odor, you may need to give it a second treatment. Remember, the longer you let the baking soda sit on the carpet, the better it will neutralize odors.
two
Consider shampooing your carpet before treating it. If your carpet is very dirty, the baking soda alone could not get rid of the smell. You could give your carpet a deeper clean and shampoo as a prelude to a baking soda treatment. This will increase the likelihood that the treatment will work.
3
Instead of using regular carpet shampoo, try using a mixture that contains half white vinegar and half water.
4
If you wash the carpet, wait until it is completely dry before applying the baking soda.
5
Consider perfuming the baking soda to help mask the smell. For a really stinky carpet, you could add a fresh scent to replace the old smell. To perfume your baking soda, pour it into a large container. Add five to ten drops of essential oil. Use a mixer to stir the smell and integrate it into the baking soda. Pour the baking soda into a shaker, then treat your rug as directed. The following fresh scents will help counteract the smell:
- lemon or citronella
- lavender
- eucalyptus
- cedar
6
NOTE: If you have pets, make sure the oil you choose is safe to use around your cat or dog.
7
Repeat the process after a few weeks. If you allow too long to re-clean your carpet, bad odors will build up again. Keep your carpet clean by using a baking soda treatment every few weeks or at least once a month. Baking soda is very likely to completely eliminate odors that have lingered for months or years.
Tips
Add a few drops of lemon juice to the baking soda and mix well before using. This will add an extra layer of pleasant scent on top of the odor-neutralizing effect of the baking soda.
Things you will need
- baking soda (also known as sodium bicarbonate)
- Vacuum cleaner

Homemade Carpet Deodorizing Product
Homemade Carpet Deodorizing Product
As soon we will have to start thinking about storing the rugs, we are going to see a home method to deodorize rugs. With products that we surely have in our pantry, we can remove the bad odors that permeate the rugs with use and thus we can keep them clean and scented for the next winter.
- Homemade Carpet Deodorizing Products
First of all we are going to see how we can make our own carpet deodorizing powders, using an old acquaintance, sodium bicarbonate and then we will see how to clean and deodorize our carpets with this wonderful product.
To prepare deodorizing powders we need:
- Sodium bicarbonate
- Essential oil, orange, lemon, lavender ... the one with our favorite aroma
- A recovered bottle of spices or similar, which has holes to comfortably sprinkle our deodorizer
In any container we put the amount of bicarbonate that we will fit in the pot that we have, we add a few drops of the essential oil of our choice and stir with a spoon so that all the bicarbonate is impregnated with the essential oil. Next we pack the scented bicarbonate in the dusting pot.
If we have any stains on the carpet, it will be time to clean it, we can use a paste based on bicarbonate and water or some other method, such as this one that we already present in another article on this page. When we have the carpet free of stains we will go to deodorizing, for this we will sprinkle our deodorizing powder all over the surface of the carpet and with a stiff bristle brush we will give a good brushing throughout the carpet so that the dust enters between the fibers of the carpet. Then we will vacuum to remove all the deodorizing dust. You will see how your carpet remains with a great clean smell, it will also be completely sanitized.
Do not forget to label, even with a simple marker, the scented bicarbonate, although you can also print a label to make it perfectly recognizable. And keep it with the cleaning products, please, so you will avoid possible confusion and accidents.

Sometimes trying to clean with some liquid, we add moisture and the carpet ends up worse. If this is your case, do not worry here we explain how to solve the issue without having to throw the rug or take away your friend's favorite place.
Your allies: baking soda and vacuum
These two ingredients are just what you need for this job. If you want to give it a smell, not just remove it, then you should look for an essential oil that you like. Lavender or vanilla, for example.
Vacuum the carpet to remove all dust, fiber debris, pet hair, etc. It has to be completely clean to proceed to the next step.
Spread the baking soda all over the carpet. To perfume it, add a few drops of essential oil to the baking soda before pouring it on the rug.
Leave the mixture to act for at least three hours, the longer you leave it, the more odors it will absorb. Then vacuum again and remove all the baking soda.
What if my pet had a "liquid" accident?
If they are puppies or very old, we will not be able to escape from urine on the carpet, but do not worry that the bicarbonate also works at this time.
Blot fresh urine stains with a clean cloth. Absorb as much of the carpet as you can before cleaning it. Use a clean cloth or several pieces of absorbent paper to dab on the rug to absorb the liquid.
Create a vinegar and baking soda solution. Combine 2 cups (500 ml) of white vinegar, 2 cups (500 ml) of warm water, and 4 tablespoons (60 ml) of baking soda and pour into a spray bottle. Spray a good amount of the mixture on the urine stains on the carpet and let it sit for 5 minutes.

The most effective ways to leave your carpets like new
The most effective ways to leave your carpets like new

- The most effective ways to leave your carpets like new and products
But… it must be said: the carpets are dirty. They get full of crumbs, fluff, stains, and worst of all: they leave odors. So that this does not happen, let's first be clean ... and being clean is basically divided into two categories: no mess and clean.
Beware of rugs! Because they get very dirty and cleaning them can seem difficult, and it is if we do not know how to do it. Therefore, in this book of ideas we will review some tips so that cleaning your carpet and leaving it shiny is no problem.
Fight bad smells
All kinds of bad smells can come from our carpet. Smell of smoke, mold, food stains, and so much more disgusting. The stench usually builds over time until it becomes unbearable. So let's try to get the carpet dirty as little as possible. And let's follow these brilliant tips to beat unpleasant odors.
Sodium bicarbonate
A marvel. That's what baking soda is, especially when it comes to bad smells on your carpet. We just have to sprinkle the baking soda on the smelly area and let it rest for about fifteen minutes. Then vacuum.
We can also sprinkle with a few drops of essential oils mixed with the bicarbonate. We mix well and do the same as indicated above: fifteen minutes, vacuum. The smell will blow us away!
Baking soda is special for eliminating smoke odors.
Vinegar is the most
Vinegar is a great substance when it comes to naturally deodorizing carpet. Let's use our nasal power to know where the bad smell of the carpet is coming from. Next, let's clean the infected area with soap and water, plus an antibacterial detergent. Once this is done, let's fill a bucket or any container with half a cup of water and half a cup of vinegar. With that we rub over the area to be sanitized.
Vinegar has incredible properties that, among other things, fight stains and deodorize your carpet in no time. White vinegar is the best for these cases.
Salt can be very effective
Salt works very well if it is necessary to absorb urine, a frequent problem if we have small children or pets that roam the living room in our house. Faced with such an accident, we must act urgently. We immediately pour salt over the urine and see how it absorbs it. We repeat the step until it does not absorb more and let it act for about 15 minutes.
In this way, all the moisture in the carpet is sucked out and the bad smell goes away immediately. Isn't it wonderful?
The benefits of soap
Soap is a substance that is very commonly used to remove dirt and odors from carpets. We simply mix a cup of hot water with half a teaspoon of detergent or mild liquid soap. We apply it on the carpet and let it dry with a towel on top. We repeat this process until the stains are removed. Finally, we rinse the area with a solution of vinegar and water. This trick is special for removing blood and wine stains.
The classic deodorants
Applying the correct deodorant can be enough to make our carpets smell fresh and clean. There are deodorants that are specially made to deal with the bad odors that are formed by mold or smoke.
We can also make our own deodorant very simply. We mix half a cup of baking soda, borax and a teaspoon of ground spices, such as cinnamon. Then we store in a dry and ventilated place. We sprinkle the mixture and leave it on the carpet for half an hour. This deodorant is very useful to eliminate odors related to pets.
When cleaning carpet stains, be careful not to scrub too hard as the carpet fibers tend to get destroyed in the process. To clean the most difficult stains, such as coffee or tea, let's use a cup of water mixed with ammonia.
In case the stains do not respond to any of the treatments mentioned above, seek help from professional carpet cleaners.
